Can I have clothes made here?
I just got back from India about two weeks ago and am thinking of going back to have some clothes made to sell at home and hopefully also to make contacts so I could either email or mail more orders. I guess you could call it a business venture, but mostly I just want to go back.
I was planning to do it when I was there last time, but I needed to order them when I got to Mumbai as I was also leaving from there. Instead I left Mumbai about 7 hours after I got there. I did check on prices to have the stuff made and it would be worth coming back for and also is a good excuse. Anyway, how is Goa for this? Are there many tailors? For what I have in mind I would need about 40 or so of the outfits made. I would only have about two weeks, so I figure I would go to several and have them all make 5 or so. Someone mentioned Pushkar, but I would much rather go to Goa as I havent been there and from there I could order the outfits, stay a few days to make sure they are correct and then head further south. Any info about this idea and recomendations for tailors to use would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris |

All I'd say is go to one Tailor only - having made sure that his work is good. There are some that aren't so good and the salwar's and shirts tend to fray at the seams after a few times of wearing as the material is scrimped on. You would find that your "customers" were not quite as happy then, as they were initially! Find ONE good tailor, and make a deal on the price, with a promise of a small bonus if the work is acceptable. You can take a wuick look at seams there and then, and see whether they've been doubled, or at least got plenty of room between the seam and the edge of the material>

A friend of mine (many of whose family members lived in India) did this years ago and had the same problem shanthi mentions. He also said that in addition to the seams fraying there were problems with the quality of the buttons and zippers used, and also sometimes the tread itself. So you should either make sure your tailor has access to and uses decent quality components, or provide them to him yourself.

Thanks for the info. I dont really know anything about sewing so I will definately have to do some research on that. I have a few fabric stores near where I live that I will have to go to and interogate the people who work there
Thanks, Chris |

What you could do is source a good tailor and contact (someone who could do quality checks on the material, accessories) .when you visit next time. This would keeps costs low and quality high.It takes 3-7 days to stick clothes in mumbai depending on the season .
