There was a thread not a long time back on the same topic - suggest you have a quick thread search - road conditions etc were discussed there.

I will paste the link if I find it...

The first route has better roads (somebody returned recently on this route, was told the other one is not so good).

But the other one is never as good...narrower State Highways, sugarcane threshing on the highway, etc.

If I was going to do it in one day, I would take the second route.

If two days, I would take the first route, halt at Bijapur overnight, which is good for a few hours... and 400km from Hyderabad via Sholapur, and a little more than halfway.

28th.. be aware of the recent agitation against tourists starting that date (or was it 27th) discussed elsewhere.. also CNN/IBN seems to be covering this somewhat, at least in the things which scroll at the bottom of the screen.

The best and the most reliable road hyd - goa

Hey Friends,
There are 6-7 ways to reach Goa from Hyderabad.I'm mentioning few that I have travelled on.

Hyd -sangareddi - zaheerabad-Homnabad -Gulbarga-jewergi-Bijapur -Belgaum- Goa (This road is good but with Heavy traffic in bowenpally till Bhel.Zaheerabad -Homnabad road is bad and infested with very heavy traffic.Homnabad -gulbarga -jewrgi is really good,but after jewrgi its a confused road with average to very bad road. Bijapur- panaji is superb , but with bad path overall of max 40-50 kms.Total of 760- 780 kms. Not suggested

Hyd -Sangareddy -Zaheerabad-Umarga - Sholapur-Bijapur or kolapur -belgaum-goa.This route is really long approx 820 -850 kms.I have mentioned about the driving and road conditions above till Homnabad.The road is good thereafter is good, but traffic is unpredictable. Not suggested

The other road is Hyd- Jadcherla-Mehboobnagar-raichur-Lingusugur-Tarwagere -gajendragarh-gadag -Hubli -Goa.Hyd to jadcherla is fantastic 4 lanewith mehboobnagar just 20-25 kms from jadcherla with good road,But the road Mehboobnagar - Raichur is narrow with heavy traffic till gadag.Also hubli -londa route is a mud road, though as soon as you reach hubli you'll find a 4 lane,but after kittur its virtually a mud road till khanapur and the rest is good and also mentioned below. This is the Shortest of all ,Around 700 -730kms.But going by all parameters Not suggested

I happen to visit Goa on 21 August 2010 and the below mentioned road is what I preferred and this road is highly suggested in all.

Refer to the route:
Hyderabad - Pargi (Via chevella) Fantastic road of 85 Kms. People might suggest you to go via shadnagar or for instance google map etc, But the chevella route is the best and shortest.
Pargi - Kodangal. (Approx 45 kms)Take right turn from pargi as the stright route would take you to shad nagar.Now this road as you enter might look a bit withered,but nothing to worry, the road is really good.
Kodangal - Yadgir (Via gurmatkal) (Approx 85 kms)Just a way to rip at 140 Kmph,the view from gurmatkal ghat is breathtaking (Ghat here is just 2-3 kms).Most of this road is 4 lane.
Yadgir - Shorapur. (Approx 55 kms)The road is good till some govt office, From here, you'll have to take a left turn,This road of 22 kms is Bad,soon you'll reach the X road, A right turn would lead you to shapara,instead travel stright to lingsugar.
Shorapur - Lingsugur. (Approx 55 kms)A narrow road ,but virtually no traffic, average road condition ,you can still travel at 80-90 kmph.
Lingsugur - Mudgal. (Approx 20 kms) Good road conditions, with good view can travel at 100 -120 kmph,but instead travel at 70- 80 as there are steep turns,this'll also enable you to have a good view outside.(This place is also decisive as some may suggest you to divert via Muddebihal to bagalkot, this road is indeed short, but mind you, this road has potholes as deep as 3 feet.Only few lorriewalas dare this road.Anyways we want road with no lorries.)
Mudgal - Bagalkot (Via ikal) (Approx 90 kms) till IKal the road is 50- 60 kmph kinds(25-30kms) from Ikal you'll have to take a right turn to bagalkot.This is a 4 lane road with fewer traffic, just rip...but as a village comes you'll encounter 6-7 small serial speed breakers.I believe you got it. those dhad-dhad-dhad types.
Bagalkot - Belgaum (Approx 170 kms) most of the road is 4 lane and don't miss to rip.
Belgaum-Panaji (Via khanapur -londa - Ramnagar x Road-Anmod ghati) (approx 125 kms) The road till Ramnagar X road is good ,but from here to anmod is Bad .Total of 20-25 kms.And the rest, some quality ghat section with superb view and good road to panjim via Ponda.

The total route is not exceeding 750 kms whatsoever and having tried so many routes, I just think this is the best.but has one draw back not too many dhabhas on the way...

Hyd -> Goa

Thanks...great post...we are planning a trip this month end..and want to start by 4am from Secunderabad..we plan to take the Hitec city route as the road is good and there's virtually no traffic at that time. Then on to Zaheerabad for some breakfast and then move on to Solapur -> Bijapur -> Belgaum and then Goa via londa. Do you think it will be easy to make it by 8pm to Goa? (Baga beach) or atleast 10pm? Hopefully there is no problem finding petrol on the way...there are quite a few big cities...and we are only travelling by a petrol car..so diesel is not an option .

the road we took was as follows:

Zaheerabad -> Solapur -> Bijapur -> Yargatti -> Belgaum

We had lunch at Jamkhandi, thats between Bijapur and Yargatti. The roads in this stretch are good and you can go at an average of 80. We did 80 (avg) in our Baleno with 5 people and lots of luggage in the boot and we got very good mileage (around 19kpl)

After that, we got a bit lost in Belgaum...there's a route that takes you to Goa via Amboli ghat. you have to ask specifically for that route as soon as you enter Belgaum, otherwise you will end up going back and forth on the Londa route, like we did. I didnt want to prefer the Londa route because of the other comments on the post (iron ore mining etc)

The Amboli ghat route is decent, but its a 2 lane road and there will be quite a few trucks and buses coming in the opposite direction, with their headlights on full beam as usual. So its best to have a companion sitting beside you that can provide you a second pair of eyes on the corners, while you concentrate on the road and the driving. Road is bad in a few patches, and its ok if you can go a bit slow. We were in the ghats around 8:30 pm and we could still do top speeds of 50kmph in our baleno..unfortunately we started scraping the body on the road after sometime and needed to slow down. there were scorpios and other suv's going much faster than us. If you are going by your own car (not a travel rented one) then you wont have much trouble at the toll gates. a few tickets could cost you a total of 100. At the entrance to Goa, the border police ask you for your papers, so make sure you have everything in tact and up to date!

The return route was a bit more adventurous. We reached Belgaum quite early, and then we were caught in a discussion whether to go back by the same route or to take the Raichur route. The Raichur route was appealing because of the Bangalore highway's proximity and the speed at which we could get back to Hyderabad, but we didnt know how good the road was from Belgaum to Raichur. So, we decided to go back via the same route we came by. So much for all the decision making. We took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up on the road that would take us to Kolhapur, but what a road it was...it was just a straight road and wide and too good to go at 80 avg, so we stepped on the gas and touched 130kph...and then at the end of that beautiful highway, we reached another long stretch which had OKOK kind of roads and we were only able to avg around 60. We then had dinner and headed on back on the Solapur Zaheerabad route and reached Hyderabad by 5:30 in the morning...

the drive was good, but as you can see, you'l waste a lot of time driving...for next time, we all made a pact to jsut fly out to Goa and spend more time there than sitting in the car with your bum going numb

hope all this helps!
