Wink Buy Salwar Kameez(?) in Goa

Hi,

Starting a 4 month trip in Goa. First Mandrem then Palolem then off to Karnataka, Maharastra, Gujarat through Rajasthn to Delhi.
So, I want to buy (or have it made) one or two salwar k's. What are good places to obtain them? Any suggestions?
thanks,
Mea

You'll find that is a bit like saying, 'I'm going to London, where's a good place to buy a blouse?'

Just look around the shops. But be aware that they come as a kit, ie you buy the pieces of fabric and take them to a tailor.

Even the ready-mades tend to come in one too-big size that needs altering.

Happy Shopping

Thanks for the reply.
Actually I could have asked somebody that question (about London) because I wouldn't have a clue but..
okay, may be I wrote a too quick post. I was just wondering if it is easy to get them in Goa, and suggestions about places where you can find a tailor or shop (close to Mandrem or Palolem) to make this kind of clothes (on those places the clothes are more - to much- touristtailored). But I guess I can find an opportunity in Mapusa, Margao or Chaudi, can't I.
Never bought one in Goa, so.... any tips still welcome.

And the obvious answer is: Marks & Spencer.
So is there a comparable answer to the SK question?

You'll find shops selling material and tailors eveywhere. Don't worry.

You can buy readymade Salwar-Kameez at several different shops in Panjim, Vasco or Margao. Go to Bharne's in Panjim where you can buy them pre-stitched or you can also buy the material from them and go to a tailor and get it custom made to your taste.

As Goanjock says plenty of ready made ones in Panjim Market, very resonable I paid 250r for nice cotton ones, material abounds everywhere in the markets, shops etc., and everybody seems to do tailoring- bartering will be your only hassle. There is a Vishal supermarket in Panjim, near Fidalgo Hotel it just opened last year, they have a huge variety and all at fixed price. Apart from food it does menswear, ladies western and Indian style clothing, shoes, bags, fancy goods, bedding carpets etc. Most of the locals use this store and everything is fixed price and great value. They also have a tailor in-store who alters things there and then about 50r. Worth a try if you haven't been to Goa before as it gives you an idea of prices you should pay when bartering. Happy shopping.Ooops, sorry guys, this is turning in a fashion column, please be tolerant, we are worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you want something really classy, very well made and durable try Rageela ( she is a top Indian Designer)boutiques in Calangute one is near the beach opposite the footbal ground, and the other is at St Alex's church. A dress about 1500r and salawar kameez 2000r but they last forever.
Hope this helps

Sorry... I'm thinking pre-retail-revolution here.

Like there was a small clothes shop or two on every shopping street. Actually, I suppose there still is, just they all belong to chains --- so stand on any London High Street and still all you need to do is look around you to find a shop selling blouses!

How do you choose? Look in the windows.

But no, we don't have a Marks and Spencers in India. Although Chennai does have a M&S branch!

Regrettably, M&S, in UK, has given way largely to Fashion anyway: it is no longer the shop where you know you can buy quality basics at a reasonable price, and just like the ones you bought last time
