Fosters is a no respect beer in Oz. In some places the Belgian company, Budweiser, may be an improvement over local swill such as in Egypt. Funny, beer was possibly invented there..

Ugh, ghastly stuff, not to mention that they stole the brand from the Czechs!

I think this tells me everything I need to know about Goa!

This is absolutely lie. I tried to buy bud in the market couple of days back it was of mfd date of November 07 and Jan 08. I complained to shop owner, he replied that they are receiving the supply of this dates only. If Bud is having share of 16% percent in Ist Qtr then how does the old beer is available in the market. Please check the fact before writing.

It's not just Goa.

Sadly, I can't taste the difference between Bud, Kingfisher, Cobra, Tiger and Fosters (apologies to the Aussie contingent, but Fosters’ marketing is 100x better than the beer); the beers widely available here in Bangalore. There may be a difference, but it is between really, really, really tasteless and really, really tasteless. I think it says more about the kinds of beer Indians prefer than anything else.

I recall Bud being widely available in Italian supermarkets a couple of years ago; only a few hours’ drive from some of the fines breweries in the world. Italians make great wine and have awful taste in beer.

I really miss German hefe weizen (and yes, American microbrews as well)

Edit: and before someone starts talking about the “ higher alcohol content of German beers making them better”; they are in the 4 ½-5% range, the same as Bud et. al. They have something in them that imparts more taste. Is it a higher carbohydrate content?

I've never been to a hot country where the beer is anything but light and hoppy and best served ice-cold. I can't imagine drinking a tepid Guinness after a 36 degree day of working or travelling in India.

I can. Guinness is quite popular in many West African countries where climate is similar to southern India.

The water is very important as is the malt/grain quality & form, and of course the finishing hops (hopefully not chemically treated) .... and if comparing to German beers then one can't forget the overall taste influence of the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516.

Are you too young to remember Watney's Red Barrel? Or Double Diamond?

No, what imparts the flavour is this secret which they call "Ingredients"

Exactly!

The 1516 Reinheitsgebot, which banned ingredients other than water, barley and hops, is the oldest consumer legislation that I am aware of. To my regret, it had to be rescinded due to European Union trading laws.

Until then, alcolholic brews containing flavourings, and brewed with added sugar which creates alcohol but adds no flavour, and nasties such as heading agents could be sold in Germany, it's just that they could not be labelled as "Beer"!

So, it is not what is IN German beer that gives it the quality, it is all the rubbish such as heading agents that is NOT in it.

Temperature varies from place to place. I guess one of the reasons for popularity is because Africans are used to drink warm and quite thick (I dont know if thick is right word here, english not first language) home made beers in villages.

That's it! It’s time for agitation! A bandh even! (or is it the other way around here? "Agitation" seems to be a euphemism for "rampaging rioters"). They can put politically correct, not actual doors and windows on my money, but they keep their dirty little commissioner hands off my beer!

It's been many, many years since I've been there, but have you ever had beer in Egypt?
