Tsk, tsk. No excuse. I was a mere literature major. Anyway, rama-roo needs to seriously reconsider (and revise) her alarmist catastrophe scenarios - "ever-thinning" is right!

Well three times the national average is still pretty significant. If you look at the bar graph there are not a lot of states getting up that far.

That a third (aprox) of these deaths were from motor vehicle accidents doesn't surprise me from the number of upside down, burnt trashed or otherwise destroyed vehicles I saw in a small part of Goa, in the short time I stayed there.

I imagine the Andaman and Nicobar Island spike was the tsunami, but I wonder what the Pondicherrie spike was?

I was thinking along with you and thinking the Tamil Nadu coast had been severely hit in parts.

However, that took place at the very end of 2004 (the year which the data above seem to be taken from). Until we see evidence of it, I wonder if it accounts for those numbers.

(The document is currently down -- maybe too many hits from here? I saw no quick reference in it to the tsunami though as you migh expect, but would need to search it to be sure.)

I notice that the Goa rate is actually 76 per 100,000, not the 77.7 we've been discussing. 77.7 is D & N Haveli

That figure, in isolation, isn't as revealing as looking at the percentages of the different kinds of accidental deaths that go to make up the whole. Not only is the percentage of the total number of accidental deaths caused by road accidents slightly higher in Goa than the national average for such deaths, but the percentage of deaths from drowning and fire is about 2 1/2 times the national average, which is not surprising. That it's also a little higher than other coastal states is also not very surprising because of the high number of tourists in Goa, who are more likely to get into trouble because they don't know the conditions, and a lot of whom are probably swimming while "under the influence". The report does not, as far as I can see, break out figure for "sudden deaths in which alcohol was involved" (one of the categories) but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if a lot of the accidental deaths in Goa fell into this category

Pondicherrie was also affected by the tsunami. (cross-posted with machadinah)
The report also said that 92% of the accidental deaths in A & N Islands were caused by cyclone/tornado but none of the Pondicherrie deaths were from "natural" causes ... so I guess that leaves out the tsunami. ???

It was nice to see that Kashmir Jammu was way down there at 17.9 per 100,000. Handy little bit of info.

The same story almost, different location, different names. Another victim. Tragic waste of life.

But all that it says is that we live in a world full of bad people. Well, not full, but there are enough of them.

I suspect it is more that we live in a world where some people have a lot and some people have very little. And those with little are beginning to get nasty.

There is a reason that all around the world high end resorts own their own beach fronts and use miles of chain link fences and armed guards to keep "the natives" at bay. The era of being able to frolic without cares in front of desperately poor people on public beaches is ending.

I don't approve of pandering to spoilt wealthy people's various addictions and I most certainly don't approve of violence, but IMHO, we all have to take some lessons from it and start thinking about what the world's disproportionate sharing of resources is doing to the humanity of both the haves and the have nots.

When that happens in India in a big way then we will be in for a massive shock, and it won't be tourists that will suffer it will be the Indian middle and upper (economic) classes at the hands of the rural poor.

I really don't know about Goa, but, so far as life in general is concerned, it is greed, rather than poverty, that is the inspiration of the kind of nastiness we are talking about (and a few other kinds too!).

But temptation can make a good man on a bad day into a thief...

This is the same story all around the world though. The gap between rich and poor in the UK is massive.

The intended project above is exactly the kind of thing the causes more resentment and hostility from locals. And who can blame them??
Gated communities with a proposed 93 swimming pools??
Sadly the economic system we try to live under promotes greed, selfishness and every man for his self. As that system is exported and becomes more in your face. Well expect trouble, unrest, and downright rising crime as people want a bit of what others have...

Exactly. Now that Pandoras box is opened, whom you gonna blame? I can´t see noone. Only humans everywhere around. Pick out and make your choice. Good luck with it. The system got all of us and there is no escape, unless you have your private flight to the moon. If so, say a hello from me. Thanks.
