The Tehelka coverage seems very fair and down-to-earth.

As long as there is a demand for drugs, no govt has been effective in stopping the drug trade -- this includes the US govt who has spent billions on the "drug war". And to what end?

I hear that many of the overdoses are due to the fact that the drugs available in India are more potent that those available in the west, becuase they have been "cut"(diluted) less. So many visitors, who take their usual dose, end up OD'ing in India.

Been there located central Calangute three weeks end Feb to March and I can just tell you people, it sucks. This is not the Goa I used to know anymore. Late night on the streets you are stepped up for drugs, for Russian girls, for whatever your poison is - they promise you the healing. Ha, ha. And Baga is the new Mallorca and itīs downtown street is Titos lane with the mo**********s from all over the world you actually tried to escape from. Itīs a shame and the Indians are now the incarnation of greed to me. No regrets, no excuses anymore. Only money making and leave a burnt ground behind. Thatīs Goa 2008. A friend of mine who lives there since 17 years gave the following comment: "They want the apocalypse so urgently that I have to assume they finally will get it". After my three weeks holiday I agreed.

Next year Vietnam and Cambodia. No alarms and no surprises. Bye bye, Goa.

Alcohol world wide is underestimated as a dangerous drug. It's a gateway. After a few drinks a person's judgement is impaired and the drugs the person might have rejected a couple of hours before start to look attractive as do sexual blandishments. Then there are the impaired motor skills and depth perception of those who drive impaired. But worldwide alcohol is considered quite a respectable potion.

A hundred or hundred and fifty percent state tax on alcohol would raise the price and make Goa much less attractive to all those just burning into town for the cheap beer, reduce the number of people causing pollution and strewing garbage and give Goa some cash for infrastructure repairs.

Changes of time!!!

Living in Goa permanently as I have done for 6 years I see little of the british media reports, but sadly there have been many changes here in the last 6 months even, not just due to the anjuna tragedy, many problems have occurred at the start of the season ie: shacks not being allowed to go up in time for the start of the season, road works that have caused havoc, bad garbage disposal the list of things goes on and on, unforunatley things havent improved over the past few years, people have got very greedy and I have heard of many arguments occurring involving tourists/long stayers with locals, taxi drivers etc over money, which has never been the case in the past, today, I have heard of 2 handbags snatches in calangute alone. The crime rate is bound to go up as the people are not earning the money in the season to survive the monsoon, sadly, they are very worried as whats going to happen next season already before this one has finished. And with any country the sign of the times changes with goverment, rules, taxes and big changes happen which the average goan is not use to and will have trouble adapting to. time dosent stand still not even in Goa!!!!

Methinks that the combination of a supply/demand of drugs and corruption, politics and the presence of foreign tourists (who are always easier marks in most countries and sometimes more naive or carefree on holiday) is taking it's toll.

Goa is a small state getting decent revenue from Indian and Foreign tourists both. It's politicians and citizens seem to be shooting themselves in the foot.

Yes i quite agree it is a small state, but with the influence of major builders from other states developing the land at a great rate its only the goans that are going to lose out eventually as they will not be able to compete with the big wigs from out of state, and the goverment has banned foreigners buying a tiny slice to protect Goa thats the biggest joke ever, the out of state people do not employ many goans they bring their own people down to work for them!!!!god help goa and the goans when the big wigs have finished buying up their land!!! but hey ho they voted the goverment in power suggest they read the small print in future.

Please tell me you are being sarcastic?

Quotes from The Tehelka

...."Ketamine — a chemical that Fiona MacKeown has seen used in England to subdue horses before castration — is mixed with cocaine in Europe and smuggled into India"

It was my understanding that you could but Ketamine over the counter in India.

"Ecstasy is imported from Sweden"

Mmmmm never heard of Sweden being Europes MDMA factory the Netherlands, yes.

There are a lot more inconsistencies in the article but it seems Goa is going to get a lot more bad press.

It would indeed surprise me if ketamine is mixed with cocaine, yes.

I have no idea if it is available over the counter, but the 'intercepted at the airport stories' in my local press seem to have moved on from Heroin to ketamine. I doubt they'd bother if it is easily available!

baga

Hi , yes Baga is pretty disgusting , plenty of white plastic , litter and police collecting backsheef . I found the North very trashy ....certainly not the images in the brochures . One of the worst things was the football-shirt wearing beer bellied slobs who I avoid at home .
Plus a sprinkling of strange german men wearing sandals and handling small children , it is a very macho area , I did not see one local woman on the beach, countless drunken men slobbering and being loud in the shacks . Not quite the spiritual haven it presents itself as , just a drug fuelled Benidorm without the class !

Sad.
