Daily Mail. I dont have a good understanding of British media, but one look at the homepage of Daily Mail tells me that it isnt exactly the epitome of journalistic standards.
One feels really sorry about the couple involved in the story - but then if you are prepared to dig that deep, you can find such horror stories from any major tourist destination. Goa has its own problems. Every one knows that. I dont know what Daily mail is trying to prove by posting a 17 year old story. Anything to catch eyeballs, I would say. |

The Daily Mail is the most reviled of British newspapers. Every day it spews hatred and lies about anyone (or any group of people) who is not "one of us" - i.e. not white, middle-class, right-wing, heterosexual and, above all, "decent". Its front page "news" usually consists of fabricated outrage at some imagined threat to the precious British way of life. The link at the top of this thread should be read in that context.
Unfortunately, the quality of its writing is often very good compared to the more downmarket British tabloids, providing it with an aura of respectability that it does not deserve. It sells something like 2.2 million copies a day - almost as many as all five "quality" national British newspapers put together. |

The Mail, the Sun, the John Gaunt, even the BNP crap have a market, millions of ordinary people who feel they don't have a voice, are never listened to, are never consulted....as we wonder further and further down the politically correct road to ruin.

Just to clarify, Nick, it's not that I don't think what happened to these folks is atrocious and terrible.
But is it enough to blame an entire Indian state for the failure of their marriage? Probably not. In fact, in a lot of cases tragedy can bring people closer together. And even if they'd had a lovely time in Colva, they probably would have run into marital problems at some point. Quickie marriages between very young people who come from HUGELY different backgrounds are not famous for being really easy. What if they'd had a fantastic time in Goa, but had run into trouble somewhere else? What if this extended global honeymoon had been fantastic, but the wife had gotten accosted in London? Immature people will find a way to avoid culpability for their own problems. The fact that this guy laid the blame on Goa doesn't seem to have much to do with Goa itself. Oh, and I'll say that in my week or so in Goa did reveal a bit of the seamy side. Not in a way that was dangerous, I just got that same sense in Goa that I get in creepier parts of the small-town American south. Everyone's related to each other, everyone knows everybody else's business, there's a definite sense of locals vs. 'outsiders'. Very 'Deliverance'. I got the sense that if I pissed off the wrong people, there would definitely be trouble. So I used my head and tried not to piss anybody off. Seems the author of this piece actively did the opposite. |

The daily mail. The name fits if you interpret it in Hindi.

Goa bashing seems to be in flavour at the moment here in the U.K.
No doubt a horrible incident to be involved in anywhere in the world. It just seems such an old story to bring up - this incident happened in 1991. And then to blame Goa for the breakdown of your marriage?? Odd to say the least. I understand Goa has its problems, but there are few place that don't. I live on the west coast of Scotland, and hard drugs are so easy to obtain here. Sometimes even dropped at your door in a taxi, I'm told. As for murder, Glasgow has the highest murder rate in Europe right now. |

You are so right Mickey S. The most frightening thing about The Daily Mail is that its writers are highly skilled in manipulating certain strands of latent populist sentiment and prejudice. They pass off their banal statements to parts of an ill-informed public who are all too eager to embrace them as constituting basic “common sense.” It's often just emotive prejudice that has little in common with what is really happening. Anything its writers don't like is dismissed under that catch all phrase "political correctness." I've been looking at its website to see its reports on the Keeling/McKeown case in Goa. And it's usually been true to form.

Yeah. It would point to the many failures of our dear leaders and police this side of the border. Better to indulge and point the finger of indignation elsewhere.

Glasgow is a fantastic city; one of the best places I ever lived. Violence - if there really is any - must be confined to very specific areas of the city, because I never encountered any nor did I ever feel threatened walking the streets at night. As for hard drugs being delivered in taxis... I wish I'd known. I had to go out for mine.
