British Media on Goa

I won't go back over the sad events that unfolded in Anjuna, or point the finger of blame, that has been covered in another thread. I'm home in Scotland at the moment, and keep hearing and reading all these horror stories about Goa. Don't want to be negative either. I have spent a reasonable amount of time in Goa back and forward since the mid 90s. I have nothing but happy memories of the place, and my many good friends there. Never had one bit of trouble, ever. Stayed in various parts both North and South. I don't really have anytime for the media and its hypocrisy - have'nt bought a newspaper in many years. Why do you think the British media is giving Goa such a hard time, and almost blanket coverage at the moment?
These stories are not the Goa I know.

This today from the Daily Mail by David Matthews.

Interesting report, if true it does show a slice of life in India. Is it the media's fault? Did they hire a gang? The Goa I knew was a paradise. However, my last trip was enough to convince me that "you can't go back". Lots of other places I need to see..

Because the person killed was British and most news corps are not non profit organizations. Well, to spread awareness/news is their job... no?
Aside, I am sure the Swedish news corps are doing the same thing about the swede woman killed in Thailand. <just saw that in a BBC news trailer>

Wait, this guy marries a woman who is his polar opposite in almost every way after 6 weeks of knowing each other. It's an interracial relationship, which as groovy as that is, can often come with a lot of cultural baggage.

And somehow the failure of their marriage is Goa's fault?

I think we should all just start blaming Goa for all of our problems. Lost your shirt in the housing collapse? Blame Goa. Don't get laid as much as you'd like? Probably something to do with Goa. Burned dinner? Spilled milk? Damn you, Goa!

If you go around punching people in India, you can be sure a mob will apppear..

I shoved his hand away and punched him square on the chin, knocking him down.

One of his friends stepped towards me and I hit him twice. He staggered back and then ran into the crowd.

Foreign Nationals and things that happen to them simply get more coverage than the locals...as simple as that.

Clippers??? You do realize they have no chance what so ever in the NBA, and the finals are mostly likely going to come down to Lakers vs. Celtics. Unless Gasol, or Bynum, or Bryant suck.

Guys, that's a bloody terrifying event, where-ever in the world it happened, it just so happens it was in Goa, and that fact can't be avoided by the number of people it didn't happen to, or various bits of trivia.

That article talks about something that happened seventeen years ago, and if that says anything about the media, it says that once they have got their teeth into something they'll dig as far as they need to to find dirt, and dirt is something our British media loves. Goa is in the news just now, so expect Goan dirt.

I don't know Goa. I'm told that the culture there is very different to any part of South India that I know, although there is plenty of tourist flesh on show at Kovalam's beach. But when I see that pic of Scarlett, 'showing off her assets' as a GF of mine would have called it, I wonder. Maybe the stretch between two cultures has become too much.

Or maybe I've lived in Chennai too long, and this kind of dress is as common and acceptable in Goa as it would be in my UK

yes i think. if you are talking about her photographs on the news sites, i dont think anyone in goa, gokarna etc will have any problem.

i think it was about drugs and her company. some site even claimed that she had friends in russian drug mafia in goa.
