Best media about Goa?

Are there good books/movies/documentaries about goa? I'd like to get a better feel for the place before I go... and I'm finding the guidebooks lacking. I think I saw a bit of it at the beginning of the Bourne Supremacy... but I don't know if they really shot there.

Anyone can recommend a good movie about Goa?

The Bourne Supremacy

That was most definitely Canacona Island offshore of Palolim in south Goa at the beginning of "The Bourne Supremacy." Reading reviews that said parts of the movie were filmed in Goa made it "must see" for me. Over the past 20 years I have read more than a dozen Robert Ludlum books while flying on planes, on trek in the Himalaya, or waiting at the State Bank of India.

Good book?

If you want to understand the hippie scene, you might try 'Goa Freaks' by the late Cleo Odzer. 'Gates of Fire' by Elwyn Chamberlain also has some sections set in Goa -- but that's fiction. You never know when real-life follows fiction!

Goa has an extremely active local book-publishing sector. For a region of 1.4 million (tiny by Indian and South Asian standards), there are a huge number of books being published. The problem is: most are self published. This means, you never know when they're put out, and by the time you get to know, they're out of print! Or untraceable.

Do visit my book review site at http://goabooks.swiki.net (Swiki.net is freespace, so it tends to be occasionally down!) -FN

Yup, that was Goa....

I think I saw a bit of it at the beginning of the Bourne Supremacy... but I don't know if they really shot there.

I can guarantee you that, that was Palolem Beach, in the movie. I was there last year when they were shooting those scenes!! It was pretty funny being from Los Angeles, and used to seeing movies shot in my backyard, and then going halfway around the world, and having the same experience! Definitely deja vu for me. That bazaar, is right outside of the Palolem Beach Resort that we stayed at, and the beach he was running on, was exactly where I got the best tan of my life!

I will be purchasing the movie just for those first few moments and memories.....ahhhhh paradise.

Lightbulb last hippie standing

i found this film called "last hippie standing" - if you use p2p then you will not have any problem to download it from somewhere out the net.

"Last Hippie Standing" is a video clip style portrait about the hippie generation. Thirty years ago, this was a movement which came to Goa to find something they couldn't find at home. Many returned, a few stayed. Goa, the hippie paradise of the 60's is our point where we start to search for "the last hippies". This former Portuguese colony in the south of India was for many the final destination after adventurous travels through Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Dreamlike untouched beaches promised to be a new holy land, which was also the spritual basis for Alex Garland's novel "The Beach". After viewing historical Super8 material we started searching for the famous beaches and found a new youth culture which seemed to be similar to the old hippie culture. <p> Raver, Part-Time-Hippies, Backpacker und "normal" people enjoyed the beaches. We met people from Japan, Israel, Australia and the UK. Anjuna Beach is the center of the infamous Goa parties. Here, the millenium celebrations promised the best of all Goa parties. This is where the youth of the world demonstrated their understanding of fun.

I could not understand what kind of information required about Goa.
If it is simple guidebook Outlook Goa guide is ideal and funny. I know there are separate guidebooks on Goa from LP, RG and Footprint. I have impression they are just chapters from respective India guidebooks with additional information on Goa history.
If you need book on Goa I found Claude Alvares - Fish, Curry and Roice is useful, also magazine Goa Today. But last book and magazine is possible to find only in Goa itself.

I think the OP has had firsthand experience of Goa by now...

Interesting thread though. And there's a restaurant on Palolem beach that now advertises itself as the place where Matt Damon had breakfast.

Thumbs down Outlook Traveller Guides

I find the Outlook Traveller series "52 weekend breaks from bangalore / Mumbai / Delhi" very unreliable.

They are so desperate to find 52 marvellous destinations that they abandon their objectivity and mislead the reader about the merits of the destination. Everything is amazing, stunning, gorgeous, etc. Take anything they say with a big grain of salt.

I have made 2 trips based on their reccomendation, and both times been disappointed and largely disagreed with their descriptions once I reached. I would prefer frank appraisals and facts to hot air and marketing based hyped.

I stick with Lonely Planet and of course friends for basic info, and occasionally refer to Outlook for a trip idea, but I would not dream of carrying it with me or depending on it for information ever again - they have lost my trust.

Anyone can recommend a good movie about Goa?
'The Boarding Party'? But it's 1980s, and is set in the World War II era. Films about Goa (as with most small places) are usually caught up in the Bollywood/Hollywood cliches. FN
