well pondicherry-the auroville has seaside cottages which are located approximately 10 kms from pondicherry, and the beach in front of the cottages was rather nice, never ventured too much in though. And yes women were swimming in their BIKINIS without being ooogled.

Om Beach is a great beach for swimming. Gentle waves. There is another great beach in Goa for swimming but it is my little secret.

Goan beaches are not really suited for children swimming or playing unaccompanied. Conditions vary due to state of tide and wind -- in the winter season mornings are generally calm with a stiff onshore breeze coming up in the afternoons, particularly as the land begins really heating up in February.

I'm mostly familiar with the area north of the Chapora river (Morjim to Arambol) as I generally spend a few of the winter months there evey year and regularly walk the shoreline. Mornings, especially when tide is low or mid-range, is very pleasant swimming and I'll often see parents with their kids enjoying themselves. Sometimes, if there has been a storm somewhere offshore, there will be nicely-formed waves perfect for body surfing. Generally, I'd say that anyone using a part of the beach that is relatively deserted and unprotected by life-guards should be a capaple swimmer -- at least comfortable in the water so as not to panic if there should be a mild side pull and be aware of how to get out of it safely.

The most popular part of Arambol beach is partially sheltered by cliffs, has a lifeguard station, warnings when swimming is dangerous, and has a large explanatory sign at the place where the village road ends at the beach.

The picture below is the main part of Arambol beach looking northward towards the most popular, guarded, area.

I agree. One will rarely see indian swimming in the sea in india. Even the fisherman avoid it. There are no life guards on indian beaches. No beach is conistently "safe". I have been to a beach that was nice an calm on one day and rough as hell the next -- the weather and tide and in continuous flux. So consider the risks before you attempt to swim. Does not mean I have not taken my chances. But, one should recogonize the risks. Also, the availablity of alcohol (at least on goan beaches) results in people taking chances that they would not when sober.

You know I reckon using the beaches in Goa isn't anymore dangerous than beaches elsewere in the world!
The drop off in the southern Goa beaches is definable, the rips aren't prone the massive shifts, so keeping your feet on the ground and avoid the days when the big waves come crashing in. Just use care as you would anywhere else and the warm waters of Goa won't harm you!
For Kids things are different I agree, There was a time that I would have said the North end of Palolem beach offers a great shallow sanctuary for kids!
Unfortunately the recent developments have lead to a pollution of the river and I'm not sure the shallows are still a good place for kids

No crocodiles on the beaches. You can see some small crocs in the interior of Goa.

It may not be what you have in mind, but the most brilliant place for a safe swim is, wait for it : at the Mapusa swimming pool.
One of North Goa's best kept secrets - I kid you not, this pool is Olympic size and standard. A really EXCELLENT place for a serious swim.
The seas can be rough, not good for serious lapswimming - so if that is what you are looking for, you find it opposite the Mapusa Hospital, which is on the Motorway near the junction for Thivim.

Its a really bizarre place because hardly anyone knows about it, you'd never guess it was there, or so good, from the outside, but there it is. A REALLY outstanding swimming pool.

In Goa I prefer Ashvem, Morjim in North and Palolem, Madjem in South.

I have two kids, 1,5 and 4 years old, and this season is our fourth, with kids in Arambol, so I have to agree with m2 and some of the other authors, Arambol is great for kids.

And, I also agree that swiming in ANY ocean is no game, and NO children should at any point be left alone in the water, on any beach, so this I don't think is unique for India beaches.

And when it comes to Indians not swiming on the Indian beaches, I think it has more to do with the general swiming abileties of Indians, than anything else.

All the best
