The quality of the meat is not very good but the main point to consider is whether you want to eat shit or not! The pigs in Goa are fed a diet consisting of human feces. Yuk! ![]() |

In factory farms as well Goancanuck I think not!! Even the village pigs rarely get fed this way these days as the pig toilets have largely disappeared in favour of the even worse septic tank!!
Anyway this always makes me laugh sure the idea is yuk but what do you think they are feeding pigs in the west??? The biological process breaks down the poo anyways!! I do agree that mostly the quality of pork in India isn't great though very very fatty!! |

Pig Toilets are still quite the norm in the villages, How else are they to feed the pigs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Found This Here http://www.shen.org.uk/pigtoiletspage.htm Pig toilets Palolem, South Goa, India. About five years ago, I was told about the pig toilets in Goa and simply dismissed it as a fat-bloke-down-the-pub lie. On further rumination however, I realised the sense and simplicity of scavenger waste removal in an area with such a low water table. Thus inspired, I embarked upon a journey to donate my own unwanted effluence to these lean and hungry streetcleaners. I found the toilets in Palolem in south Goa. They are not public toilets, they are owned by the locals, but fortunately they are not locked. Having to ask to use someone's pig toilet would have been embarrassing. To find the toilets, I simply followed the pigs. I think the two images tell the rest of the story. I really cannot explain the feeling of superiority to be gained from watching another live being eating my excrement. ![]() ![]() |

Most don't use these toilets anymore seventies. They have been replaced with toilets with a septic tank under them!! Even that one in the photos (it's the Blue Welkin) judging by the stencilled writing on the side of the privy there must have been some kind of subsidy available!!
My landlord in Palolem keeps a herd of a about 20-30 pigs and they get fed much like in other countries with all the waste product from the kitchen mixed with boiled rice!! I mean think about it do you really think pigs get fattened up by eating poo ??? The humans involved would have to eat plenty to keep a herd of pigs in poo ![]() |

It's a well known ritual feeding the pigs and almost all the villagers do it they just step out of their front door and make a well known sound and bang the steel pot a bit and the pigs know it's dinner time!! As do the dogs and crows!!
Of course being free range pigs lord only knows what else they eat! But the Goan pig toilet is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. I can't remember the last time I seen one in use, they are mostly just relics in the back garden these days!! I can well understand peoples reluctance to eat pork though, myself I don't very often only at the various "feasts" I get invited to and of course Goan suasage I mentioned but I mainly eat the massed produced stuff and I don't think the suppliers of these firms rely on the village pigs to run their business! Though thay could very well be eating something worse!! Pig swill any where isn't a pleasant proposition! Anyway, where were we on restaurants I believe!! |

Best beach shacks
Hi,
I've just got back from Goa - I went out to plan my wedding (feb Goa). The Zeebop is definately the best. It's more of a beach restaurant. It is fantastic, the best sunset , the best food, the best quiet location in Utorda (next to the Kenilworth). All the shacks are great - I recommend heading down to the beach and simpling choosing any of them. Have the Red Snapper or Tandor Prawns - heaven! Have a great time. PS Zeebop is so fab we're having our wedding there. |

Cyberhippie, it is still quite common in Goa to find pigs spending their "free time" lolling around in the cool environs of the septic tanks which are there everywhere. The pig toilets may be disappearing but they have been replaced by the even filthier septic tanks which leak more often than not. The average shack or restaurant serves the meat of these local pigs not the factory bred ones. Most of the local folk feel the meat of these pigs is "tastier".

So as much as I love pork, I think I am going to stick to beef/chicken/lamb in goa..which would be a pity...unless of course i can find a farm that sells its own products...really not worth having a tape worm farm in my body ![]() |

Yeah veg food is cleaner and healthier but when you are with your buddies having a booze session you are always tempted to try out some of that "filthy" pig meat. ![]() |

back to the food......
all very interesting about the pig toilets.... but not a suitable topic for dinner, no?!!
ok - i'd like to share a little gem.... i spent 6 month in goa last season, searching for the best bhaji, and i'm proud to annouce the winner...... First prize: The Pav Bhaji shack in north anjuna. it doesn't have a name, or any proper seating area, but they will give you a chair when you turn up. To find it, go to the line of small street stalls on the road just outside Club Paradiso, and you'll just spot the tiny chalkboard hung outside a tiny tiny shack. Its not a tourist place, more of the place where the shop owners and taxi guys go for snacks. Good luck! Second Prize: The Sai Hotel cafe in Mapusa market. Its on the back wall. Try the Ussal bhaji (if its on) or the chana masala, with parota bread. mmmmmmmm p.s. would appreciate someone freezing a few bhajis from either of these and posting them to uk please |
