Depends on exactly what you are looking for. Just quiet beaches or within easy reach of more bars/restaurants, or maybe more central for sightseeing. Mobor, for instance is about 40 mins from Colva, a bit isolated. Colva has got most bars and restaurants but the beach itself is scruffy. Between Utorda and Colva is good and from Colva south to Benaulim and futher is good. Wadda ya want?

as an afterthought, as you are an utternutter, you might want to hire scooters.

Take a look at:

www.macprofessor.com

This will give you a flavour of Agonda ~ one of my most favourite beaches in South Goa and only a short distance from Palolem.

I would pre-book ~ although Agonda is a nice quiet beach it is becoming increasingly popular. The contact details are on the macprofessor site.

You are guaranteed to enjoy this beautiful place.

I never make reservations, but agree with MADABOUTINDIA, because January is high season and it's better to be safe than sorry. But I bet you would find something anyways. Just might take a bit walking.

And I'm skeptical about advance reservations. I imagine that they overcharge if you do it by e-mail. And you can't bargain either. And also if you've never been there, how do you know if it's a nice place and worth the money?

Here's one place in Patnem that's good. I highly recommend it.
