Beach shack lottery

Hi! Do you happen to know if the lottery of having a beach shack in Goa has already been held? If not, do you know when it'll take place? Thanks very many.

Are you going to be opening a shack? I think the lottery is later this month.

The shacks on the beaches in Goa are alloted through a lottery. This practice was introduced to eliminate corruption.

Well lets hope they don't allot yet more beach spots for restaurants in Palolem
The beach can only take so much and the rediculous amount of restaurants (many with only two tables in use at any given time) in and around the beach in Palolem is fast erasing the charm of the place, that and the disappearing palm trees, which are no longer looked after, as tourism takes over from the more traditional art of fenni distilation!
Great shame!!

The lottery was instituted to curb the excessive building of beach shacks which was spoiling the attractiveness of some popular beaches and the competition making it difficult for many operators to make a living. The number permitted per beach is limited, and the applicants are *supposed* to be otherwise unemployed Goans (at least I think that is still the idea). Some of the 'lucky winners' have been renting their permit to foreigners and there has been some messing around by the politicos and their friends, but in theory it is an improvement over the previous chaos and blight of overbuilding.

This post crossed with Cyberhippie's, but yes, Palolem is the 'posterboy' for overdoing beachside development!

I hear now every Tom, Dick & Harry participates in the lottery and winners, if they are not shack operators, sell their permit to the regular shack operators. typically you will see the same operators in the same location year after year -- because they buy the permit from the "winner" of the lottery. The increased number of participants reduces one's chances of winning the lottery.

The lottery is only for the shacks right on the beach. Those shacks/restaurants which are more than 200m from the high tide line are permanent provided they were originally set up prior to 1991.

Unhappy

The fun and games have started already and the season's not even started.
I've heard that all temporary liquor licenses have been revoked by the excise department which means that most shacks will be liquor free as they are operated mostly on temporary licenses. Similar thing happened last year and took ages to sort out.
Hope your friend with the shack knows someone at the top!!
