Question Bangalore to Goa on a bike

Hi,

I'm planning to take visit Goa on my bike. I found out about two possible routes. One takes us to Mangalore on NH 48, then turns northwards towards Karwar. The other is NH 4, via Chitradurga, Dharwad, Belgaum. I guess the former is more scenic. I plan to start from Bangalore at dawn and want to reach South Goa the same night.

Can you please tell me what kind of roads and travel time should I expect on these routes.

Cheers!!

Beg to differ slightly there Keshav, though i would have completely agreed with you a couple of months ago.

I recently drove to Ooty from Bangalore. Went via Coimbatore and returned via Mysore. Of course the Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri stretch is nightmare but surprisingly, the nightmare didnt end there. In fact, it continued all the way till Coonoor. While returning, as soon as i entered Karnataka, the roads were delightful to say the least... almost all the way till Bangalore.

Anyways, Oceanic, another route u can consider is via Shimoga. The roads are average and Shimoga - Sagar - Honnavar road is excellent, winding with very less traffic. From Honnavar you can take the NH to Goa. If you have Outlook's 52 Weekend Getaways from Bangalore book, then look up the route to Karwar. Goa is about 100 kms down the road from there.

It took me about 8 hours to get to Karwar, by car.

Cheers

Are you kidding me, 8hrs to Karwar? That's very nice. I guess it'll take me much longer on a bike. Around 8hrs is what it took me to get to Hampi. Thanks a lot for your reply. Btw, I don't know what road to take to reach Shimoga either. Is it given in 52 weekends book - against the entry for Karwar?

Cheers!

Not all roads are bad.. NH-17 is a gem although single laned for most part... I rode along the NH 17 from Calicut - Goa this december and was cruising comfortably at 90-100 Kph for most part...

Yup, lookup Devbagh in Contents in that book. Devbagh is an island resort in Karwar.
You have to take NH4 from Bangalore towards Nelamangala.

On the same day? Seems quite difficult.

Take the road via Mangalore... very scenic, you'll pass Udipi, Gokarn, Karwar on the way. Quite an experience.

average travel speeds on indian highways are now about 40 kmph. 10 years ago, it took 2.5 hours to go from bangalore to mysore (130 km) . Nowadays it takes 5 hours.

There's a new highway from Bangalore to Mysore - it should be finished this year.

Last time I did Mysore to Bangalore (August 2005) it took 3½ hours including a stop for a beer.

Avoid NH-4 if biking.

We just did the Bangalore/Mysore trip last week. The new highway goes almost all the way through. The worst parts of the road are going through the villages along the way. It was about a 3 hour trip each way.

Hey guys, thanks for your replies and suggestions - especially gypsyking.

@Concoran: I took NH4 while going to Hampi on my bike. Seemed alright to me.

I'll follow the path via Shimoga. Hope to have a great trip.

Cheers!

I can give a route where the road condition is terrible at parts and yet enjoyable.
I am assuming one can return via a different route.

Bangalore -> tumkur -> Shimoga (Excellent road so far) -> Jog Falls ( only about 5 kms bad road) -> Siddapur -> Sirsi -> Ankola -> Karwar -> Canacona -> Mudgaon etc

Return

Canacona -> Yellapur ( There is SH 95 - quite scenic) -> Bankapura -> Haveri -> ChitraDurga -> Tumkur -> Bangalore .

-> Just open Yahoo maps and try these as source and destinations.
