No defense needed, as there was no assault. But coming from that background yourself, I'm sure you'll know what I meant. If one was a little careful then, why not be so now. Let's say you're a top manager now, imagine your amusement at having some pics be thrown up without your knowledge involving you with your full name and a bong in the nude thirty years ago. You'll catch my drift.

This comes with the web anyway, and we all carry our past that we should be able to live up to; but there's no need to add to it out of sheer carelessness. But carry on dudesses, as far as I've seen there were just some nicknames thrown about above, no harm done whatsoever. Just a word to the wise.

I haven't been to Goa since early 1973, so can't help you with photos from the times you were there, sorry.

No, I don't have any photos from the earlier years, either -- I didn't carry a camera in those days. I can see it all quite clearly in my mind -- piggies and all!

Les, My photo gallery on IM has a few photos of India old-timers. These weren't shot in Goa, but the people may have traveled there.
The people photos are mostly on pages 6-7, but there are others spread around......

I have a few photos around from the late 70s. There aren't many left (destroyed during an acrymonious divorce), but what's left, I'll fish out & put online for you, soon.

I don't know any of the nicks of the posters here, but they may not match those that were used, back then.

For my part, I was "Tarot" Ray, from '74 onwards (though I was there every year from 1970) and at various periods made The Stoned Pig magazine ('75/6), sold the first ever Goa souvenir t-shirts, ran a health food business (cheese, yoghurt, cheese cake, home-made bread, juices etc.) and made the Goahead magazine in '81. After that it was the cheese business, travel and a fracturing marriage, 2 young kids and a very difficult life.

I finished up back in Europe, where my life took a totally different and most refreshing turn to the, then fledging, Internet business. Anjuna always calls me back & I've visited a couple of times in the years, since 1986, when I left. Eventually, I'll probably wind up back again, but who knows their future?

If any of you knew me, then & want to PM me, I'd love to hear from you. Nostalgia rules :-)

BTW off-topic: I just got a nostalgia boost today, when I received a postcard from one of my daughters, currently in India, dated February. Since it was sent, my other daughter spent a month in India, met up with her sister & has been back for weeks. I received the card today! Indian time never really changes

Sounds nice So was this easier back then? How did people manage to stay for what seems years on end? Just doing the visa hop forever? Did you have an Indian partner for the business?

(And btw to have that paper online is great stuff!)

No, it was no easier really. The trick was to just do your business and wait for the authorities to contact you - it takes them years. If you asked permission, they'd never let you do it. We had no Indian partner but we did employ Goans as workers. We even started a cheese factory, in Belgaum with a partner (also a foreigner), who was friends with the Maharaja of Belgaum. We did it on the same basis of just start it and wait for them to question us about taxes, permissions etc. They never did. BTW running a market stall in Anjuna cost us Rps 1/- per market, back then, which was collected by a Panchayat worker.

Ah, the visa hop. That didn't start for Commonwealth citizens until the early-mid eighties. Before that we could stay indefinitely. That was the main reason why I returned to Europe, eventually. With 2 kids to bring up, needing education & stability, it was out of the question to keep up with the visa hopping.

As has been mentioned in other threads on this forum, to consider that there was any parallel between the lives of any two people is erroneous. Each person had their own story, their own methods of finance, their own lifestyle etc. We may have been lumped together as 'hippies' or 'foreign tourists' but actually we were just people, after all.

I'm glad that The Stoned Pig is being read again, after all these years. Personally, I love to go over the local prices in the 'Live-in Goa' supplements. The inflation has been so mind-blowingly huge.

Well put, Ray. That's why I like forums like this. People tell all their different stories, and when their stories took place in the same time and place where I was living and creating my own story, it's a hugr nostalgia rush.
