Animal Spay and Neuter Programs in Goa
I am in Palolem, Goa for several more days. An avid dog lover and feeder I first became aware of a humanitarian program in Goa from reading forums on India Mike. I was told that the dogs who have a "v" taken out of their ear are the ones that have been fixed. I wish to donate some money, not a huge amount, but enough to spay or neuter several dogs. Where is the nearest agency to Palolem that is responsible for this program? I will check back tomorrow for any replies. Thank You

http://www.iar.org.uk/india/goa.shtml They are based in North Goa, but I am sure they must have a rep in the South. I can personally vouch for them as a worthwhile organisation. Thank you for the kind thoughts towards Goa's strays Johnny Five ![]() |

Dogs Spay and Neuter
Thank you very much Johnny Five. I have sent the Goa contact person an e-mail asking if there is a South Goa location. I see that you can donate off the website. I just wanted to make sure that the money would go to Indian dogs that needed to be fixed. It breaks my heart to see a very thin mother dogs nursing pups. Even sadder to see a nursing mother dogs with no pups to nurse. I hope they have them hidden, but fear the worst.

On arrival at the IAR we were told that a puppy of that age would be put down as it would need too much attention for their limited facilities to cope with and 6 weeks is their minimum age for re-homing. This I could accept as I knew how much attention such a tiny creature would need, Three hourly feeds, keeping it clean & warm, basically replacing Mum. What I could not accept was the "putting it down" part! So we have brought her home for a couple of weeks (or more)until she is old enough to go back here for homing. Our 14 month local bitch at first thought it was a toy but has now gone quite motherly. We have called the baby Pumkin (sic) as she came from the Veg Stall! In this case the slogan has to be, for us: "A Dog is just for Christmas, not for Life!" Because........we are not in the position to have two dogs at this moment, so if anyone out there knows of a good home for this pretty little creature when she is a few weeks older, or even now to experienced people, please let me know. She is only available to foreigners as we have seen how our otherwise lovely neighbours treat their dogs, unless you can personally vouch for them! Johnny Five hundred dogs if I could ![]() |

Nice to see there are people out there who care.
We left money for a pregnant cat to be looked after 2 seasons ago, all went well and the kittens got homed. Last year at Seby's on Titos road they regularly had raffles for IAR, where we donated a few prizes before travelling home. We intend to take whatever we can find or beg of the local vets to help the IAR on our next trip in the new year.

Might be good to check with IAR or the checklist on their web-site as some medical things are easy (or cheap) to get here and some are not. For example, today we went to Union Pharmacy in Mapusa to get worming tablets for our adult dog and were amazed that they were rs37 each per 10kg of dog-weight. This is quite expensive as Ciplox anti-biotics are rs10 and 400mg Brufen are rs 6 for 10! You would need to check with IAR if they are quite as sensitive to so-called "out-of-date" medicines as we are in UK also, as these could probably be got for next to nothing. Give us a shout (pm?) when you are back, we are very near IAR. Regards Johnny Five minutes from IAR ![]() |

You can always go to walk the doga at the animal rescue and if you buy Notix at any shop its powder that gets rid of ticks, fleas and mange on dogs and just puff the powder on any dogs you see. It does say rub in but i dont .2 market dogs i have done i put the powder on they had really bad mange but are now ok. Cost about 50rs enough for loads of dogs, i keep it in my scooter and use it on any dog who looks like they need it.
Sorry but i am one of those people that feel more sorry for the dogs than thebeggars who come here from out of state nwho are laoded ! |

We all do what we can in our own way and I'm sure there are many dogs who experienced comfort thanks to you. Just one note of caution. One night I was discussing with dog-loving friends the good old days, 12 years plus ago when flea powder here was DDT. This brought about the question "so what is in No-tix that we all use"? There followed a brief internet search on the contents declared on the pack which revealed that the active ingredient is Sevin. Not mean much? Try Bhopal! Yes, the Union Carbide plant at Bhopal was making Sevin. Still better than DDT though, just make sure you wash your hands asap after use and most important, avoid breathing the powder even though it smells nice! Can't have you getting ill, coz you're a star for doing what you do and your dogs would miss their treat! Love ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Johnny Five ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I have read the information on the IAR site, will read again. My sister-in-law is a vet and we have a very good relationship with our local vet.
Looking forward to going to the IAR shelter when we come over. (end of Jan). ![]() |

Hi All,
Happy to read about all the initiatives IMers have and are undertaking .I live in Goa and do quite a bit of work with stray dogs and cats but have replied a little late because I am currently traveling. Although IAR does good work, please never forgot that bringing a dog or cat, especially a puppy or kitten, is NOT a solution. IAR has to put many animals down, about 250 every month!! They get only about 30 to 60 adoption requests per month but at least 300 animals are brought in monthly. If you have taken the effort to save Pumkin, please find her a home yourself. At the moment my internet access is very poor so I can not be very elaborate but on 3 January I am back in Goa and if you like we could perhaps have a chat. Lastly, please note that I am not saying that IAR is doing anything wrong, only that it is not the easy solution it may seem.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did not mean to sound patronizing or accusing or anything, it is just that we often hear that people think the IAR is a solution.
Will call when I am back! Good luck with the mother in law, I know all about that! ![]() |
