alternative to goa??? hey, i was kind of really set on going to india (goa more specifically) but the only time i can go is this summer. good thing i decided to read some stuff before or else i would have never found out about the monsoon - until i got there anyway, my question is, are there any other places similar to goa (nice beaches, maybe something to smoke, etc.) that don't get affected by the monsoon, so i can relax on the beach in july?

Hi Vlad, You should head south east to Mamallapuram, 60 Km south of Madras. Probably you should feel fine there. Jorge

hey thanx, i'm gonna start looking into it; is pretty much the whole east coast safe from the monsoon - or at least not as bad as goa? one more question, are there any areas where you find there are no mosquitoes whatsoever, or very few at least? or is everywhere just as bad? i really have a problem with them, doesn't everyone, and sprays or gels never work for me.

Hi Any place on the west coast...Kovalam, Varkala, Gokarna, Karwar, Goa, Bombay..all of them, wil have heavy rainfall in the monsoon. Try the east coast....Pondicherry and Puri will be the best option. Mamallapuram is also good...it is a world heritage site...and u can get loads of what u want...good sea food and dope also. Then....Pondicherry or Puri will be best option.

thanx, i'm already looking into it; i'll probably end up 'testing' the whole east border and just see where i'm most comfortable. is there any big difference between the east and west coast? would people know where they were, or unless you have a compas with you, it all feels the same?

Hey The beach is the same... On the West coast...there is kerala with backwaters....which are missing on the right side. There is Goa and Karwar...but, the rains make is very unpleasant and wet. But on the East coast......there is Mahabalipuram which is a world heritage site. Chennai ( 43 Kms ) and Pondicherry ( 120 kms ) are close by from Mahabs. If u go further north...Puri is great...and Chandipur...Try Chilka lake in Orissa. It is the largest salt water lake in India. So, Puri, Chandipur and Chilka are in Orissa. if u go there, Konark Sun temple ( World heritage site ) is near Puri. Also, if you go to Vizag....where the beaches are beautiful. This is because the Eastern Ghats are into the sea here. From Vizag you can go to Aruku Valley and Borra Caves. Besides, it does not rain on the East coast in June / July. So, go East this june...there is plenty to do.

Hey there vlad, can really sympathise with you about the mozzie thing. They just love the taste of me. Don't go for any of the options that people swear by, like Osmogosis or whatever it's called, or vitamin B or garlic. If you're anything like me, the darn little critturs will just consider it a marinade.. Nope, go for the deet, vlad. Soak yourself in it before sundown, and wear long stuff. And you'll be fine. Just don't run out..... Oh, and have a great time! You lucky sod......
