The thing about Agonda (and thus probably most beach places in Goa) is that there are TONS of accommodation options. Almost anything you can book ahead via the web is going to be double or even triple the price you could get by just walking in, and as far as I noticed most places seem to all be pretty much the same.

This is what you should do if you want to go to Agonda in March -- get off the bus or train or whatever in Chaudi. Find a rickshaw. Ask the driver to take you to the church, which is at the center of town. From there you will see TONS of different huts and guesthouses, most very nice and at competitive rates.

You could also probably just tell your rickshaw driver that you don't have anywhere to stay, and see if he'll stop at a few places. You'll probably end up at his cousin's place, but there doesn't seem to be a tout/commission system in effect in Agonda. Just about everyone in the whole place is related, though, and there seems to be a preference for recommending your brother's taxi, cousin's restaurant, etc.

Are you serious! Sincerely asking. I thought if you go down without a booking wouldn't they overcharge you. They would try to. The rickshaw guy could take you to "a good" place where he gets a commission, which you are paying. He pay take you to a place of your budget, but that place could be way cheaper.

I am not sure in goa but in Mangalore we went to a beach resort without a booking(cause the place is never fully booked and it was not the season either). Infact my friend called and asked them if the room was available, but she did not book it as we had still not decided. When we reached they told us that only their most expensive room was available. We had no choice but to take it.
Ofcourse in Goa there is no shortage of resorts so you could move to the next one(in mangalore the next beach resort would be atleast 50 km away)
I still would not take your advice. As for my luck maybe the first 2-3 resorts I entire might be doing good business and may not want to bargain, Some resorts have a no bargain policy and it would be a real pain lugging around your luggage looking for a bargain.

I do agree with you that booking on the net is costly. So I feel that the best option would be contact the resort directly and bargain on the phone. Try and talk to the person incharge(who can make the decision). You could get a better bargain.
I have got around 30% discount when I contacted a resort directly through a friend(he only knew someone who was working there). They dont mind giving you that much of discount as that is the % they give as commission to travel agents(and the ric drivers etc)
Orcourse dont expect a 30% discount but i am sure you can get atleast 15% as that is the least commission a travel agent would accept.
I feel getting on the phone with resort directly is better, and if they dont bargain all you do is dial another resort.

BTW any info on mahnamahnas cottages like a website.
I want to go to angoda or palolem, but would like an a/c room/cottage on the beach.
Any recomendations, the cheapest and best option.

There is a big choice of accom in Agonda. My recommendation, like Opoponax, would be to get an auto or whatever to take you there, and then have him wait with your luggage at the Church (in the centre of the beach, roughly). You can then walk up and down comparing the actual rooms that you are being offered & the prices. Make it clear that you will be comparing, and that way you will get the best price.

There are new places in Agonda all the time, many of which don't even have a phone number until they open and they may well be the best. Being new they are probably still clean and up together....plus they will have no advance bookings and will be keen to fill rooms

In places where there is a wide choice of accom and a bit of competition, like Agonda, we have always had better rooms and usually a lower price than booking ahead. When we have booked ahead, the room we have been given has not always been the one we would have chosen ourselves.

Have eaten at Madhu's but never stayed there, although the huts look nice. It has a really good atmosphere & the food is great.

One more question is this is a good time to visit.(like after 15th may).
I see that many cottages don't have an a.c. It is really hot this time of the year. Would it be hot in the cottages or will the sea breeze be sufficient.

Would really like to know if there are a.c. cottages or rooms too.(any details like website and the price).

hmmmm... SueJ, when you put it that way it makes sense. But still really inconvenient :-). You are right about the room alloted might not live upto your expectations when you book online. Most of the places in angoda do not have proper websites and it is hard to guage the quality of the room.
I think booking online would be appropriate when you know exactly what the rooms are like, in the case of well known hotels mostly in north goa.
