Accomodation in Sep\Oct

Hi, I'm looking for some good central accommodation , Baga\Calangute area for end September, beginning of October. I don't want to pay more than 1000rps per night if possible. Having never been this time of year (off season) I have no idea the standard of place I could get. Can anyone help?

Thanks

How long are you planning on staying, as this is critical to the price you will pay?

That's OK anyway, as you can bargain on the basis that you will be gone by the time most tourists (if any come?) arrive for the season.
Rs 1000 will buy you very good accommodation, should include AC which may be good as can be very hot and humid then. Most of Cal/Can/Baga will still be closed and it can feel a bit like a ghost town so if you are determined to stay in that area would recommend outskirts as any appeal the inner concrete jungle may have in season disappears in the rain.
Depends on how you want to spend your time. The beaches will just be coming back into their own, but very very few shacks and not really sunbathing/swimming time although you can if determined. Most tourist orientated businesses will still be shut. Personally, I would stay maybe Anjuna or Vagator where there is at least a modicum of countryside and greenery left. most places will be shut though.
A lot of people from other parts of India have been assuring all and sundry that everything is open until the end of May when the monsoon should start. Of necessity I have been riding around North Goa a lot the last few days and I would say that a conservative estimate of closed down businesses...at least 50% so far. Many restaurants that are still open are running a severely restricted menu, especially "no fish". This is because they are bone idle as fish is plentiful at the market.
I mention all this as it will probably be reflected by how early/efficiently the place starts up for next season.
This info is based on being here since last August 1st.

Cheers Johnny, I would normally not stay in Baga\Calangute when I go during the season and stay somewhere like Arpora or Siolim, and spend time in Anjuna and Vagator. As it is off season, I was thinking it might be best to stick to the main towns, but reading what you've said, that might not be the best case? I'm not looking for much, and will have a scooter ( I assume I'll be able to get one then!) couple of bars, restaurants that will be open and I'll probably go to the various beaches along the north coast. Ideally, if I could sample village life and have all of the above then that would be ideal.

Stick to where you know then. We live in Siolim and its lovely during the monsoon, same as the rest of the year but wet!
On the odd occasion we ventured down to Cal/Can it was horrible. Get in touch nearer the time and I will look out for where is open.

Cheers Johnny I loved Siolim, especially the chai and samosa place next to the newspaper stand, where I would get breakfast and read the daily papers.

When I say we live here, we haven't bought, just do an on-going 12 months a year lease, much safer. If you want a nice little place for two weeks in September, I know of plenty where we could get a fair price, certainly a lot less than Rs1000 a night. Also a scooter will not be a problem.
Do bear in mind that there will still be quite a few wet days, some torrential, so bring a very lightweight waterproof jacket, those that pack away into a small bag are best. Anything heavier and you will be too hot.

Thanks. what is the rain like end of September? Does it rain heavy say for an hour then dry up, or is it solid days of rain?

Its unpredictable. Essentially the monsoon is nearing its end but can still throw anything at you. You might have days of no rain, or constant rain, or a mixture, or a little each day. Just be prepared!

Johnny, one last question, I promise! Do you know what bars and restaurants may be open throughout the northern area?

Sorry for delay, been away. It is very unpredictable this year. May businesses that normally stay open through monsoon have already closed. Others that open early, did not do so last Sept/Oct.
Think of it as part of the excitement, trying to find somewhere nice to eat and drink!
As you know, Siolim is devoid of catering establishments, but the good ones on the main road towards Cal/Can, between the Assagao crossroads and the Vagator ones will be open and the one with the iron gates at the front and yellow paintwork is undergoing a total refurb at present
