If I may ask:
Have you got a specific reason for staying in Mapusa,
You're not to far away from the Anjuna area & the coast, unless you have to be in Mapusa all the time,,,,,,,,,,,,

This place is in Assagao which is a village just outside Mapusa. There are a few charities which operate from this village.

Thank you GoanCanuck! Very helpful as always!! 70s hippie - I'm voolunteering with a charity who are located in or near Mapusa. It's good to know Anjuna is nearby though - I'll take a look at accommodation there as I'm sure it's a more pleasant place to stay. Thanks!

Mapsa Guide

Where do I Stay?

There is no dearth of economy and middle rung accommodation in Mapusa. Budget hotels, guesthouses and lodges offer rooms for as little as Rs 150 to Rs 500. There are plenty of small hotels near the Kadamba Bus Stand and some decent mid-rung hotels on Mapusa Road. The GTDC Tourist Hotel near the main square has decent rooms starting at Rs 250. Keep in mind that hot water, toilets and air conditioning facilities will vary in budget hotels. The upper-rung hotels centre towards the north of the main square.

Away from the city, around the beaches are located a number of luxury resort complexes, guest houses and holiday apartments or cottages. Most of them come complete with a sea view and beach. There is plenty of good accommodation available in the coastal resorts and villages just outside Mapusa, at the nearby beaches of Anjuna, Baga, Chapora and Calangute. The Goa Government’s Tourist Department (GTDC) runs mid range hotels on the sea front in the beach town of Calangute.

Most visitors are quite happy to stay at the modest hotels, guest houses or beach shacks and simple rooms that can be rented from local families. Quite a few Goan families take in paying guests - the best way to experience a place, its culture and customs close up. Also available are hostel and dormitory style accommodation that is perfect for students and backpackers on tight budgets.

Frankly speaking the hotels in Mapusa are very few and more designed for low budget Indian tourists who can not afford to stay closer to the beach. There is just no demand for better hotels in Mapusa.

Yeah like hippie said stay at anjuna ,baga, calangute hire a bike and travel to mapusa when ever you need .
It doesn't interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare dream of meeting your heart's longing.

I too would not like to stay in Mapusa, it´s just another messy Indian town. But if you do want to stay close to Mapusa, you can rent houses around Mapusa really cheap. I have a friend who rented a really big house, with a great garden, full kitchen, hot water etc. etc. for only a few thousand rupies per month..

So if it is important to be close to Mapusa, that could be a choice. Otherwise I would likewise as others have mentioned, stay by the ocean.

Hope you find something that suits you
all the best
