Why can't I put my .jpg photo as my profile picture?
I tried to put a photo into my profile.
I keep getting this message "The uploaded file is not a valid GIF, JPG, or PNG file. Please ensure that it is and try again." I've already learned that I have to type .jpg after the photo title to get it to work [I have a MAC and use Photoshop] and I've made it soooo small that it has to fit the required size - it's now 500x300 pixels and 1.5 inches by 1 inch. I've looked at others and they are way bigger than that. What am I doing wrong? Last edited by hfot2 : Aug 2nd, 2005 at 04:40. Reason: hit "submit" before finished typing |

If you are using Photoshop use the 'save for web' function and not the 'save' function.
Under File-Save for Web If you are just saving a file and renaming it with a .jpg ending it will not work. It must be saved as that type of file. I hope that makes sense. So you must save it in the correct format, saving it in another format and renaming it will not work. For example if I open an image in Photoshop and got to 'Save As' by default it probably brings up the PSD or PDD exstension. So use the Save For Web function instead and choose jpg as the format and it should work. |

check to make sure you're working in the RGB colorspace. If it's CMYK it won't fly. Also, and I think this is likely to be the cause of the problem, simply typing ".jpg" at the end of the filename doesn't make it a jpeg. You need to do a "save as" from the file menu, and then select .jpg from the pop-down list of formats. You didn't say what version of photoshop you're using, but this info should be good for all of them.

On mac in photoshop (I use photoshop 6)...
1. Go to picture, choose picture size, put it on pixels and make sure it is a maximum of 150*150 pixels (5,29 cm). And the Resolution has to be 72 dpi (dots per inch (everything on the web is 72 dpi... no higher) 2. Under Archive choose (like mike said) "Save for the web". If your pic is mainly just a feaw collors it will look best to save it in the .gif format (logos etc)... If it´s a photograph choose .jpg (most common web format) and fiddle with the qualety button (goes from 100 to 0) until you get it Just bellow 15K in memmory size, press "OK" (save) and it´s ready for the forum... This is the Best way to save things for this Page. Getting the maximum quallety etc. Bonus Info... Under filters there is a thing called "edge sharpener" that makes a blured small pic look crisp and sharp.... Hope you got it. And good luck (it has nothing to do with luck). /I ![]()

Check it out - it's really small
Of course I was saving the original file as jpeg and not just labeling something .jpg that wasn't. I mentioned this relabeling because you [Mike] taught me to do this when I had trouble putting my camel as our avatar.
Actually, I wasn't using my Photoshop 6 but my Photoshop LE - it's quicker. So, I saved the huge composite original again as jpeg - quality 3; image size 360 pixels x 216 pixels. I went for a really low pixel per inch print size 5x3 at 72 pixels/inch and the result was a very small file - 36k which seems to have worked but is pretty unreadable. When I used the sharpen edges filter, it made it worse - esp. the words - which often is the case with sharpen. I'll probably get rid of this and try again. At least I know it was size. Who said size doesn't matter? Thanks, hfot Oh, and my comment for picture doesn't seem to appear. Where should it be? |

Resolution settings is irrelevant on the screen. A 400x 300 pixel image will occupy the same amount of real estate on the screen, and come out with the same file size, no matter what resolution you choose. The resolution settings only come in to play when printing. |

Anything above 72 is a waste of memmory for web display. Magazine print is usally 300 dpi. |

Back to my original question-
I’ve left the original very small .jpg photo composite in our profile. I had saved it in low quality jpg [at 72 pixels/inch] NB The actual original on my desktop is 23MB. If I recall the upload info for the profile picture says no larger than 500x500 pixels or 97k whichever is smaller. I copied below the info on the image size from Photoshop for the original one I put in the profile. I’ve now gone to a better resolution - higher quality .jpg - but in order to stay within the 500x500 pixels constraints the print size is showing as much smaller though this shouldn’t be an issue. I tried to insert the new photo without deleting the old one and was told there was an error. I fear removing the old before inserting the new but I guess there’s no way around it. How do some people get their HUGE photos in their profile and stay in the size constraints? I’ve used scanned photos from prints to create the composite. 36k photoshop jpg document Image size: Pixel dimension: 228k width: 360 pixels height: 216 pixels constrain proportions [Print size width: 5 inches height: 3 inches resolution:72 pixels/inch] Resized copy 72k photoshop jpg document Image size Pixel dimension: 440k width: 500 pixels height: 300 pixels constrain proportions [Print size width: 1.667 inches height: 1 inch resolution 300 pixels/inch Thanks for the info on scanning of slides - I've been wondering if it was worth it to buy a Nikon coolscan [USD 1000 or more] - we've got thousands of slides just waiting to be put on CDs - or if it just wasn't worth the hassle and money to do it ourselves. |
