What is a Buddy?

Sorry but can somebody explain what, in the IM context, is a Buddy, a Buddy list and Buddy Journal?

It's just one of those things that comes with the forum software that you can use if you want.

So if you use the journals, you can restrict who can see them.

I'm not too sure what facilities are inherent in the forum system

This might help But it is a bit Help-Microsoft-Style: what's a Buddy List? A list of your Buddies!

Before I use the buddy list feature...

If I add people to my buddy list, are they sent a notice?

Reason I ask, this feature is useful to keep track of not only members whose opinions I value, but as there isn't a separate "idiots list" I also want to use it to keep a note of people whose opinions I do not value so highly.

Don't want the latter getting the wrong idea and have them thinking we are buddies!

I've never really looked at it (it is indeed just a standard feature with many forums), but it's called the buddy/ignore list, so you'd think the latter is also an option. Maybe just goof around with it a little and see what it can do: http://www.indiamike.com/india/profile.php?do=editlist. It's also a feature if you click any member's username.

I wouldn't expect those people to be notified no, but I can't be sure. If putting people on "ignore," I reckon their posts on any threads won't show up for you anymore either; I imagine this could work out confusing, with you having to plough through reactions to posts you can't see. But it may be handy to some.

[Edit: OK so I just tried, just using the option in your username. Haylo, I added you to my buddy list, then removed you again (again, I just don't use it at all), let me know if you received notification of this. It's not so immediately clear, but on that same buddy page, the botttom box is called the ignore list, where you can likewise add people.]

To answer Birds's original question (from last year btw I see now), it's just a feature to allow you to keep track of posts by people you care about I think, instead of having to wade through the entire forum or all the recent posts.

That is how ignore works on a couple of other sites, their posts don't show. I know a couple of people who find it useful, but I've never bothered with it. I figure that if you can't deal with letting your eyes skim over words on a screen, what hope do you have of dealing with idiots in real life!

That was a pretty smart move, no I didn't receive any notification, so that answers my question!

Most of these vBulletin forums have a FAQ link but I can't find it here. Anyway if it did this is what it says:

The buddy list is used to keep track of the friends you have made on this forum. By going to your "Open Buddy List" in "Quick Links" menu of the navbar, you'll be able to see which of your friends are currently online and send them a private message. Adding people to your buddy list also allows you to send private messages to multiple forum members at the same time. You may add any member of the forums to your buddy list by viewing their profile or by going to "Buddy / Ignore Lists" in your "User CP".

Ignore lists are used for those people whose messages you wish not to read. By adding someone to your ignore list, those messages posted by these individuals will be hidden when you read a thread.

I just found the FAQ link, it's down on the bottom of the page.
