When logged in, I used to see on a thread page where I've been before on the top left a box to click for "View first unread"

I can't find this on some threads.
Edit: there it is again, and where it wasn't was on several threads where I had already read everything, hence there was no first unread!

Still there for me, and I'm sure it's heavily used.

Just a thought, you didn't click on the "Mark all threads viewed" button by mistake did you? There isn't a confirmation page or popup, it just happens straight away.
It would also disappear on the second page / tab if you inadvertently opened the thread twice.

I know I can click that little grey circle by a thread in my subscribed thread list and "go to first new post" - but is that the same function as first unread?

There are two grey circles on the subscribed thread list.

The ones to the left of the thread title have arrows pointing downwards, and yes they link to the first unread post. The ones to the right by the poster's name has right arrows in the grey circles, they link to the last post in the thread.
