global_yatri, you are absolutely right, and we should probably give our members more credit for not being taken in by this stuff.

This is just the sort of thing we intend to get stricter about.

We have many travel-professional members who give us the benefit of their experience without even letting on that they themselves are in the trade, let alone soliciting e-mails.

More than a few of us make a lot of trivial, jokey or half-relevant posts. With the obviously-pro guys there is always the suspicion that it is just to get their names in the thread, or just to get another instance of their signature for the search engines.

Unfortunately I have not been able to spot may people who are trying to sell their services here !! maybe mods take actions before I would have noticed it.

But if there can be some medium, like a thread or something, where mods can update all the names who have been Detected on IM, to be Travel agent can really help. Atleast we will have an Idea the way they work.

Those who just join to advertise get removed straight away.

Mike had a Travel Agent's forum. He found that the privilege he extended to agents were hugely abused and he banned the lot and closed the forum.

Don't you think that this may, in fact, give more publicity to such Travel Agents?

but they will already be banned by the mods...

I am not concerned about the accounts that are just created to advertise..they simply can be removed..

But as has been stated earlier that their are people who are difficult to be spotted as they will first make a reputation and then start the solicitation...

This is always a difficult situation, but we are aware of it and are always monitoring.

Exactly !! that is the reason I feel that if other members are made aware of such posters (err..IM-Poster ..hmm...I mean impostors) ...then members can be beware of such impostors in future..

Umm, like Nick indicated, rest assured the mods are.

Public hangings I won't advocate -- although I regularly push the idea "backdoors"

IM-posters!

At that point we'd ban them anyway. If their indiscretion is sufficient we'll even delete their posts.

And we do do not want to get involved in public argument with or about these people, which would be inevitable, if we had such a forum. That would be a nightmare!

There are a few who are in the business but are genuine helpful and don't overtly solicit.

But I could name at least a dozen who are fairly regular, most of whom log in only to solicit in one way or another.

Could I prove this in a court of law? No.

Would I bet a month's pay that I am right? Anytime.

Hello all,

I've just made a change to the Forum Rules again. The ban on commercial activity has been extended to cover solicitation of any kind, including charities. It's difficult for us to tell whether a charity is legitimate or not, so we're being safe rather than sorry for the sake of our members.

However, links and recommendations for commercial or charity-based organizations is still allowed, as long as you have no affiliation with the organization.

If you haven't done so already, please read the forum rules here.
