Once again, off topic but I could use this thread to demonstrate to my students how to look at a problem from various angles!

What's to stop SMS language to become another valid branch of English, except if there are not enough takers?
Nothing.

We'll check it out in 150 years!

I bet the Chinese have a way to do it!

Any answers on this from our Chinese members?

The Japanese probably just invented a new alphabet for it, even though most people would think that three is enough for anyone!

crvlr, time to get a new phone methinks . My Rs. 1500 phone has a predict text function, so the Blackberry Storm (Rs.30000!) can probably wait for another Christmas.

I have seldom met anyone else who actually likes Predictive text. The non-SMS users that I know do, like Peak, type 7777336633 for 'send' --- but they would still have to type 7777 to get to 's' anyway, so SMS-lingo users probably make as many keystrokes, maybe more sometimes, than predictive-text users who spell out words.

Predictive text is great: a lot of SMS-lingo users are just against modern technology!

Comprehensibility aside, the problem with SMS speak on a forum is that it makes the poster look like an idiot.

The name kind of gives it away- SMS/text speak. It evolved on a totally different medium where brevity and speed were important. IndiaMike is a website, not a tiny character-limited Nokia screen, and it is best savoured slowly (accompanied by a glass of good Port).

By becoming a member of this site, you ipso facto agree to the terms of membership. Basically, if you do not like it you have the right to set up your own travel advice website.
They probably think ipso facto is text speak!

Then, ipso facto, I have nothing to lose by using it.
