Text speak - STOP IT

How many more times do you have to be asked to stop using text speak on this Goa forum - it is driving me mad. I am not going to answer any more questions as I do not have time to decipher them.
Bye

A recent analysis of this evil invention found that it was a case of the tragedy of the commons from public choice theory. Its quicker for the individual to pop off. But, it wastes a ton of time for the readers to decipher. Now an interesting question is why does this proliferate on the Goa forum.?

Here's the official version,

Moderator Note:

We do not accept SMS or text-language Abbreviations in posts.

Our members and readers come from many different countries,
with many different mother tongues and age groups. Please take
the trouble to spell out your posts in English so that
all may easily understand.

But we don't get to read every post in every thread, and sometimes we just get fed up with the sound of our own voices on this one.

If you want to speak to us, speak English: is it too much to ask?

(we don't mind if it is bad English or mis-spelt English. We certainly don't mind attempts from members that hardly speak it but want to talk here anyway. All this is welcome. But not the people that can't be bothered to add a y and an o to a u.)

Why not have a forum entry on common appreviations?
I dont see no waste in that. Makes us all a bit faster?

Because using text speak is against the terms of the AUP or Acceptable Use Policy for this particular website. I have seen no sign that this AUP is about to be changed to allow SMS speak.

By becoming a member of this site, you ipso facto agree to the terms of membership. Basically, if you do not like it you have the right to set up your own travel advice website.

The ipso facto term I must have missed, does this mean we are at your mercy now???
I am having a hard time with the ipso term,
is this an actual English word or an appreviation again?
Could it be latin?
Please let us no Latin educated users know? Not all of us want to die dumb.

I think we are fighting an uphill battle. 2 reasons:

1. The younger generation have been raised on SMS spelling, and as time passes, there will be more of them.

2. Spelling rules in English does not make sense to begin. (why is it spelled "light" and not "lite"?)

I think deleting posts (although I understand the rational behind it) is quite a harsh approach in the live and let live world of IM.

My suggestion: create a separate section where only SMS language is allowed.

Questions should be asked in SMS speak and answered as such only. If an question asked in SMs speak is not answered, then the OP must repost that question using proper english in the appropriate section. Posts in proper english in that section should be deleted.

Personally, I will be staying away from that section.

Don't get mad, get even! Hit that little "report post" icon, triangle with a ! in it, and the moderators will take a look.

Again, this is an international site, with many members who speak english as a second language. I like it this site to be accessible to more people because SMS speak is not supported.

Always remember that if they say it's not about the money - then it's always about the money! Unfortunately with Blackberries et al promoting SMS rates at xx-¢/xx-rps per message sent of up to xxx characters etc. - only add fuel to this e-evolution fire. So although I don't condone these e-text actions ..... I'm starting to get with it, e-hip & into the e-lingo y'all..

I tend to agree with you, crvlvr - although I haven't a clue what your number 2 point means. However, SMS text language is yet to arrive in most areas of written English - newspapers, magazines, books, and this Forum - as an accepted form of English through 'common usage'.
Until that day, full English is the language of India Mike so all members can understand posts - I find it difficult to understand SMS texting myself, and I certainly do not want to have a dictionary here to have to look up what the abbreviations mean. Most of us have busy lives, and to do this would take up time and be irritating. As for a section of the Forum for SMS speak - since these members who write this way visit every area of the Forum this would be ridiculous. I go along with the suggestion of 'find another Forum where it is accepted'!

Replace "sent" with "sense" and it makes sense, And is a good example of what they are talking about, too!
