SH*TTY Search

As many of you may have noticed or emailed me about the search functions, since the upgrade of the site the search function has taken a turn for the worse.

As of now any words under four characters will not be able to be found using the search, so words like Goa, Diu, Tea, boy, etc......will produce zero results.

Unfortunately it will be like this for awhile.

By default the search indexes produce an enormous amount of text and consumes an enormous amount of resources and has been causing a huge load on the site and it has been killing it.

So an adjustment had to be made to clear it all out and start fresh with a different method, and the sacrifice is the loss of three letter words.

Sorry for the inconvenience and hopefully a solution can be found soon.

Mike

Folks could always do a site search via google, which works fine . . .

My "Goa" test query threw up screen after screen of results.

Good idea Mike. For general searches enough facility is available on internet so no point wasting space here.
Regards.

Does Google offer a site version Mike? I also use google advanced to search the site. However, if they do a site version (for free) it would be handy..

Occasionally a Search this site with Google button thingy turns up here. It's never there when I want it though!

BTW... being able to highlight and press CTRL-I is very nice: my square brackets were wearing out!

If you don't have the toolbar, just go to google and type (if you are looking for Goa):

site:www.indiamike.com goa

Just put your search terms last in the string (and note that there is no space after the colon).

AND, OR etc

I may be missing something, but is there a way to search for threads that contain ALL of the search terms entered?

Example: I was trying to find all posts containing information about Palm Grove Resorts in Benaulm.

Entering 'palm grove', or 'palm AND grove', or '"palm grove"' (in quotes) gave me hundreds and hundreds of results -- but most of them contain either 'palm', or 'grove', or occasionally both. Sifting through all these results to find the few ones that actually contain the complete term 'palm grove' takes ages.

Normally, I would expect to be able to specify the behaviour of the search, ie:
  • 'palm grove' = 'palm OR grove': pages containing 'palm' OR 'grove';
  • 'palm AND grove': pages containing 'palm' AND 'grove';
  • '"palm grove"': pages containing 'palm grove' (as an expression).

Unfortunately, Google is quite useless here, as it (a) does not include more recent posts, (b) a lot of older links give me a "404 Error", or (c) it displays pages that do no even include the search term (?)

Even the Advanced Search does not allow me to be more specific -- or am I looking in the wrong place?

Please advise.

If I were using Google I'd enter the following

palm+grove

I have no idea if the indiamike search engine works in the same way.

In the advanced search try using the 'Boolean' option and limit it to the Goa forum.

Boolean will produce better results however it is not the default search since it is very intensive on the server side of the site.
