Dear Sirs

I am the manager of the central branch of the national bank of Upper Volta, and recently discovered that one of our largest business clients left the country without leaving a forwarding address. Upon checking the contents of their safe deposit box we discovered one extremely rich cheesecake, freshly baked. Your name was forwarded to us as someone who might be able to assist in relocating this item. Kindly forward to us a suitable address, birth certificate, vaccination certificate for your dog, and kindergarten academic records and we will transfer the cheesecake to you. Wishing you all the best.

the cook.

ps - guess what's for dessert tonite....

Thanks all.
Hmmm... I received two (identical) PMs from soneone who joined on October 9, and has only posted two messages. They were sent on October 18; was that before the new policy went into effect?

Mod note

Yes. The new policy went into effect a day later.

Folks, new rules or not, you can always report an annoying unsolicited PM to any mod. Usually immediate action is taken.

When I try to PM a friend of mine, I get this message:

".....has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her"

She has been a member since July 07 but hasn't posted anything. So does this mean, we can't PM? Or can I somehow add her to my private list??

She may have disabled PMs. I think you can do that.

PS: Yes, you can. In the usercp, edit options, there is a tick box.

But bear in mind that

under the new rules, she may not be able to PM you back anyway.

We have the option to not accept PMs; it seems your friend has taken that option.

No she hasn't. She just emailed me to say that she has been trying to PM me and can't. I have tried to PM her and can't as well. So after reading this thread I thought it may be because she has never posted.

I think this is the answer... the operative word being and. Although, she has been a member for a while, she hasn't posted...Damn, she better get posting then! So, how does the buddy list work? If we are on each other's, does the above rule apply?

The mods have wanted this change for a long time, and it has been discussed for a long time.

There will be no perfect system, and it's a pity there has to be restrictions, but the PM system was an easy way to get around the rules of the website, it also allowed members to PM any and every new female member, it also allowed lazy members to send their own 'unique' "How do I get from Mumbai to Goa?" PM's, then vanish into the night without even a thank you.

I've received thousands of private messages from new members asking about train info (or to plan their entire Itinerary), yet I can't remember a single time when the member could be embarrassed about their message or have any other reason not to post the questions in the main forum, after all, it's just as easy to start a thread (or reply to a thread) as it is to send a PM.

Hopefully the new rules will encourage new members to start threads.

I guess new members should be able to receive PMs --- maybe a techie thing that Nadreg should look at.

This site is based on commercial software, so what can be done is often limited --- there's no team of IM programmers busy on the next version.
