personal photographs in indiamike photos

off late i have seen far too many photographs that probably belong to personal photographs folder in picassa or flickr. like "happy" and "lucky" sitting on the bed of their hotel room or "Liz" sipping coffee in some restaurant with nothing else in the photograph.

do we have any policy for the kind of photographs that you can upload? or is it like anyone can upload anything? problem with this mass storage of photographs is that most of us just look at resent uploads section of homepage. these photographs kind of take the fizz out of the resent upload section of homepage.

any thoughts?

Somewhere, I forget where, it is written, "We have so many, please share only the best".

I'd certainly urge people to use the photo gallery as a sharing gallery, not a storage option. It was never intended to be the latter.

Apart from that, there is no policy that I am aware of. The moderators delete duplicates when they spot them. They also delete near duplicates. The same mountain view at ten-minute intervals! whereas it might have made three very nice contrasting pics. They also delete the utterly irrelevant; My doggie in Southend, err, yes, but this is an India forum!

I'd also suggest that people do not upload too many pics from their trip at one time, unless they are very varied, as that rather takes over the front page. Heck, maybe it's just that I'm not as fond of mountains as many members are!

This is just my personal thoughts. Although they may benefit from two years on the mod team, I'm just an ordinary member --- so I am not, in any way, trying to tell others what to do !

I think we need to focus more on uploading India Travel pictures, as that's what the main focus of the site is. The photos section was not meant to be a Picasa or Flickr, but more a way to supplement the travel content within the forums. Please use it wisely.

One of the things I've always meant to do (when I have more time) is to spend some time pruning the pics and removing the ones that aren't related to travel in any way.

Don't look at my photo gallery, it's a real weird mixture of things I added to help with various threads and replies.

thats one of the valid reason to upload pictures.

few years back, going through the latest uploads used to be good fun. not any more.

I really disagree. There are some wonderful pictures almost every day.

As a moderator, I used to check out the uploads as a daily task, but it was one of the most pleasant of tasks. I find that I don't look every day now, but every time I do look at the gallery, I browse the thumbnails, at least, back to the last time I looked.

My favourites are the people, the birds and the creatures --- and there is something good nearly every day!

This is my suggestion for improving the gallery: Impose a daily upload quota.

There used to be one; it was removed when the site grew to a server of sufficient resources that disk space was no longer an issue.

Imposing a quota has two results:

--- it prevents the daily front page being totally filled by dozens of similar pics from the same person

--- (maybe) it focusses minds on what to upload.

That's a good idea Nick - will point this out to Nadreg! I too think the photos are great, but not so keen on several of the same thing. Although I can't have too much of the flower ones that have been on recently - they are just beautiful!

Hmmm... that's food for thought, Nick. I didn't want to impose a limit, as people who have a bunch of photos to upload will typically not return if they hit their quota. But a quota does inherently impose a quality over quantity rule, which is what we're going for here.

I think it can be fairly generous, maybe 20 in one day?

My impression is that our most regular contributors, and some of our best-quality contributors, probably don't exceed that, and would not find it burdensome. We have contributors who have uploaded dozens, even hundreds, of pictures, over time --- they have the sense not to try to do it all at once!

That does happen, yes --- but we do have members who are much more active in the gallery than in the forums, and it would be a shame to penalise them.

I've been thinking that I should have said earlier --- there is nothing wrong with personal photos as such: I have no problem, for instance, should Nomad upload a picture of himself in his hotel room; it is part of the personal touch of IndiaMike membership.

The possible problem comes when there are fifty such pictures, and little else! Especially, as Nomad says, from a member none of us know yet anyway.

Here's one for consideration.

Does a whole load of bikers' pics have a place here?

Bikes 49

Posts Nil.

I couldn't agree with you more Nick.

Did any one notice that one person (now "Account Closed") posted this - see attachment (mine is bigger and better so, theoretically, it's from the great state of Andhra Pradesh, India ) - picture and claimed/made it out to be their own picture from a 'crossing the border' country?

Does that look familiar? If you are a MS Windows user, you should be quite familiar with it.

Here it is:

I noticed them earlier.

A bike on a road, a bike with a man next to it, a man with a bike next to him, a road with a bike on it, a man on a road next to a bike......nothing to do with indiamike.

I was looking for the photo of a couple of men in anoraks eating biscuits and drinking chai whilst writing down number plate details.
