-- to others, the quote is in reference to another thread where it came up) is that members may have different page viewing settings; possibly browser-dependent too, I really wouldn't know.So anyway if you want to point to a given post, and you copy the URL for that page from your address bar and just mention the post number, this will not work for members with a different page set-up. They'll be led to a very different page, and would still have to look for that post nr. on an unknown page if they want to (hardly doable on a thread of any length). The best thing to do is point your mouse at the post number of a given post (top right of any individual post, so the red #651 in case of this post); now using right-click, this is in fact a hyperlink that you can copy. Using that, this should lead any people following your link straight to that post.

Permalinks on posts
In Post 2578 of the UK Visa Sticky, I posted a "permalink" taken from the top right hand corner of post #2326, though I'd incorrectly typed the texed I'd hyperlinked as 2236.
Anyway, that link to #2326 works for myself and Nick-H, but apparently when Mike Cork uses it, it directs him to a page somewhere in the 1700s. When I looked at the URL for my post #2326, I noticed that the /59/ part probably refers to page numbers. Now that makes me wonder, because myself and (I think) Nick have our pages set at 40 posts per page, and perhaps the links don't work properly for those who have their pages set at 20 posts? Either that or Mike is losing his marbles! ![]() The URL for this was http://www.indiamike.com/india/indian-visa-and-passport-questions-f9/applying-for-an-indian-visa-in-the-uk-your-questions-and-experiences-t70699/59/#post788082

Er, see my above just now, Haylo
![]() btw Following up on what you say, I've wondered if people who do actually properly copy those post nr. hyperlinks, but have their page settings at longer than standard, will not come up with faulty links for people with different settings. Looks like that might be the case then. I notice it often with certain specific members; and I suspect they do all have their page settings set to display more posts. It would then follow that my above solution of copying the post nr.'s hyperlink proper doesnie work either. |

Let's see if Nadreg has anything to say on this. Nadreg?! <-- Where's my yelling smiley ![]() (So what it seems to boil down to is a hyperlink to a post will consist roughly of forum name/thread title & designation/page nr./post nr. It's that page number that screws up when people use different page settings.) |

I set my page length to 5 posts and followed that link again. This time, instead of sending me to #2326, it sent me to a page starting post #291. ![]() Wonder whether this is the sort of thing that can be fixed? Fingers crossed... |

I find I can generally follow links to specific posts given by other people, but that the links to posts that I give do not work.
This is because the link includes a reference to the page number, and I have my posts-per-page set to the maximum (50 I think) for easy and quick browsing. Try this one: Link It should link to Quote:
...indiamike.com/india/india-for-beginners-f122/blondes-to-dye-or-not-to-dye-and-women-s-wear-women-s-safety-etc-t46858/29/#post656614 The post is on p.29 as I view this long thread at 50 posts to the page. I can't test this, because I'm always myself (a matter of personal development ), but I believe it used to be the case. Can the page-number be removed from these links, as it is not a constant! |

I think we've established by now it's those page numbers that screw up; it would be up to Nadreg to see if there's a way around it. (You'd think it should be possible to allot those posts their own and permanent URL's, regardless of page; but I really don't know the ins & outs of it, it would depend on database structure and stuff.) Another suggestion and probably not to the liking of those who like to view more posts per page: But if all else fails, it could be considered to rip out those page viewing settings. I.e., have the default be the only option. |
