Moderation of Pictures on IndiaMike.com

Hi all,

In order to maintain and improve the quality of pictures on IndiaMike.com, uploaded pictures that aren't directly related to India travel, or the travelling experience, will be deleted from the image section.

This is not meant to be a criticism of the deleted images, but rather a means of keeping the central theme of the site focused on India travel.

Thank you, and happy IndiaMike-ing!

What about our wonderful Indian Wildlife pics?

I hope they continue to be a part of the gallery, and that our wonderful wild-life photographers are not deterred from continuing to post them.

I'm all for moderation of the gallery; stuff like duplicates and near duplicates should be weeded out, for a start, and guidelines, or even rules, are a good thing to keep people informed, but unless you really mean that only pics taken from cars, trains and hotel windows are acceptable, I think you should consider the wording of this one a bit.

The wildlife pics are staying, don't worry. This is meant more to weed out the ones that are near duplicates, as you put it, or images that are out of focus and/or poor quality.

FYI -

One of the other suggestions that had been made to improve the quality of uploaded images was to impose a limit to the number that can be uploaded per day.

I am setting this limit to 10 per day for now, but I may reduce it further down the road.

Thanks

Good idea!

I still have about forty to put on from my various trips, the ones that I think are of sufficient quality to make them worth sharing, but I haven't had the patience to upload them one at a time - I'd much prefer to see batch uploading, but as we have a "quality" issue, I'm guessing that the last thing we need is to make it easier!

One side effect of the limit may be that people spend more time captioning their pictures well.

Yes, Haylo, I hope they spend more time captioning as well. Sometimes I come across brilliant pics, and there is not description as to the specifics of how/when it was taken. It really is a shame.

I applaud your move, nadreg! I think people who want to upload photos of themselves posing in front of their cars or bikes should use flickr, picasa, etc.....

Thanks, Sama! Yes, we need to concentrate on quality more than quantity.

Great ideas Nadreg. I also see that you've added a "Report Photo" link, thanks for that too.

Even worse is when they don't even say where!

Good move on the limitation; i think it's a good idea.

...But then I would say that

Good idea. Ever considered a minimum photo size to weed out phone camera shots and other nonsense, like National Geographic's "Your Shot" does?

Can you also add a feature that detects comments on photos that are similar but worse than my own and then email the comment originator and say 'oi, this picture is better, go and give it 10/10'

The 'report photo' feature: is that for duplicates, bad photos (that are completely out of focus etc)

Any chance of making the thumbnails smaller to fit more on the page?

And - sorry I don't want much do I? - how about the ability to choose a date the picture was taken and maybe select the state/town that's closest? This way you could easily search for a town's or wildlife park's photos.

I don't think we get very many of those and, although rubbish shots that are rubbish quality are not very welcome, there are always instances where something gets captured however, and the story is more important than the quality.

Like, why oh why did I not think of whipping out the phone camera the other day when a cow sauntered out into the road and, fully blocking it, and staring me in the eye, took a long, leisurely piss, before continuing?
