listing personal emails in posts

The mods have noticed lately that there are many people looking for travel partners, and in those posts new members sometimes list their personal email addresses.

in the "messaging and notificaton" options when you register it states about listing your email in your profile:

"We suggest you leave this box unchecked and use the Private Messaging System instead of allowing members to contact you via email."

unless you love getting a ton of spam, the mods feel that generally it's not a good idea to post personal email addresses in a public forum like this. we usually delete the email addresses that we find and leave a mod note as to why. If someone PMs you and you give them your email address, of course, that's your choice.

we're just trying to look out for our members!

Hmmm... yes, true .

People, it is not a site rule!

It is just something that we find people are usually glad if we prompt them to think about it.

What about email addresses in profiles?
Those seem to be displayed fully.

I suppose one doesn't need to fill them in and/or can take them out.

as Nick says, it is not a site rule. but the sentence in bold in the first post is the SUGGESTION of this site when someone registers as a member, i.e., the suggestion that personal emails NOT be listed in profiles.

but also as Nick says, hey, if you want a ton of spam and unsolicited emails from people looking for the love of their lives, go for it. and the mods don't edit profiles.

I'm trying to imagine a line of thought........

Spammer / Seeking Travel Partner type sees attractive member name and or profile pic in a post, clicks and heads over to the personal profile and viola!

There's the email in full glory, not even hidden behind a button or anything..

yes, that is usually the way it works.

I used to have my instant messenger user name listed on my profile and got lots of "invitations" to chat from names I did not recognize. so I blocked those user names and removed mine from my profile.

don't want it, don't need it.....

That's why it's handy to be a little careful about what info you put out anywhere on the web, indeed. Ranging from spam to general idiots.
