I cannt access to IM in my broadband ,but i can do it in home with other connections in the same notebook.
what may be the reason?
any suggestion?

it must be blocked on the Firewall

the fact that you can access IM on the same laptop on other connections likely rules out IM, and your laptop as being the problem. That confines it to your broadband connection and the provider. I'll try to step through this one by one.

1) If you can access other sites on the broadband, but IM is unreachable than it means the physical connection is working, its able to connect to your ISP, your account is being authenticated, and you are able to browse the internet in general (the problem is with IM specifically which means it could possibly be some sort of addressing issue i.e - for some reason or another the sever at you ISP/provider is unable to resolve the IM address and actually "find it" on the internet, or its being blocked for some reason, etc). That's a tricky problem to solve because its a case of finding out why that one address is unreachable, when everything else is ok.

2) If you can browse local indian sites on the broadband but not overseas sites - then the physical connection is ok, your account is authenticating, and it looks like your provider has a problem with their overseas connection.

3) If you can't browse either local or international sites, but can download the homepage of your provider - then your physical connection is ok, the account is authenticating but, your provider has no connectivity to the outside world at all (could be their connection is down, or the server that turns internet addresses into actual numbers isn't working - so it can't find anything on the net at all).

4) If your broadband connection shows green lights on your router (modem) for "xDSL" and "Ethernet" , but a red light for "status"- then the physical connection is ok but your ISP/provider is not authenticating your account. Try phoning your provider and ask them to reset your account.

5) If your broadband connection shows green lights on your router (modem) for "Ethernet" , but a red light for "xDSL" and "status"- then the physical connection is not working and its unable to reach your provider to authenticate (let alone browse). Try phoning you provider and ask them to get the lines checked.

6) If your broadband connection shows green lights on your router (modem) for "xDSL" and "status"- but shows a red light or nothing at all for your "ethernet" - then your laptop is not connecting to your broadband router (modem). Try checking the connection, then check the ethernet port/card on your laptop.

oh..btw - where is this broadband connection? Is it a work broadband connection? And is it possible that your work is deliberately blocking access to IM?

Apologies for the long winded reply - fault finding is a boring process and in the absence of any other information this is a bit of a brain dump!

Items 4 & 5... light colours will vary according to model.

My MT800 has, for instance, Green for ADSL Link, and orange for ADSL Authenticated. But if the PPoE is being done from the PC, then just Green for link is fine.

My Netgear is less communicative: it just has a light to show it is connecting.

I automatically assumed that all routers would follow the "green is good - red is bad" line of thought.....

as long as the lights are not red or completely blank - then it should be good

Nick, having not even given the firewall a thought for six weeks, and knowing that Boss is good at touching on week point: What had you in mind? (also translates as WTF are you on about this time?).

Boss, I was just wondering if you had noticed any unusual activity...

Anyway, after protracted to-ings and fro-ings, political machinations, reproofs for things not done (as if I cared) over the past fiver years, and inaccurate quotes from other managers, it would turn out that the coffee machine wasn't working.

If you open a command prompt, and, at the c:\> prompt, type...

C:\ > ping www.indiamike.com

Exactly what happens?

What other connection[s] are actually working?

How have you configured the network for the broadband?

I would also open a command prompt but I would try:
tracert www.indiamike.com
and see where it stops.

ping is the first test: before even sending packets out it will tell you if your DNS is working.

Really, we don't even begin to have enough information to diagnose this one.

tracert... it'll tell you if it is getting outside your net, but given that the OP probably has little or no knowledge of networking, it is better to request and get basic information here.

oh well...at least you had a firewall (and a coffee machine.....was it one of those "push the buttons get a latte" types...........sigh........th at is the ONLY thing I miss from the office I used to work in).
