Indiamike The Screensaver

Member Rab has been busy creating a nice screensaver for the site. You can download it from Here. It is a collection of some of the photos of the gallery (hoping no one will mind) presented in a nice slideshow presentation to decorate your pc at home or at work.

The images he chose are more based on the size of the images since larger images display better with a screensaver. It's pretty nice.

Unfortunately in our continual disregard for Mac users you will not be able to use it since it's only for windows.

Enjoy

Rab,

- when i was running the setup-file, i got the message 'trojan horse sub-seven ......' from my Norton software .
This might be a coincidence, if more people get this message, something might be wrong .
- if i end the screensaver with the esc-button, i get this message from Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library :
Runtime error ! abnormal program termination !
I have no idea what that means.
(run windows 98 SE)

Great screensaver !

Rab's wife here...we use Norton too (on both pc's, windows xp) and have installed the screensaver on both, but haven't had any trojan warnings.

If you've got Norton set to warn of any attacks on your firewall and were still online at the time, the warning might have been because of separate activity....if not, try
http://www.trojanscan.com/ to see if something has slipped through Norton?

The runtime error I think can be caused by lots of things - it can mean you've got a trojan on your pc - but it can also be due to other corruptions in upgrades etc..

I think the runtime error will usually report a specific .exe eg. Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library : explorer.exe
Runtime error ! abnormal program termination ! so you could then have a look around on the internet for specific help...but maybe there's a microsoft guru on indiamike that can help??

My first reaction to your post Dreamsyndicate was "Shit I've just infected 20 or more of my Indiamike virtual friends with a terminal virus and not only will I have to face the shame of it but also the worldwide litigation!"

Then I calmed down and checked my Symantec software; I have Norton Systemworks including Antivirus running, up to date and enabled.

I have just done a full system scan of all 65,000-odd files on my PC including the screen saver files and found nothing. Mrs rab (dreamingwombat) has done the same plus she has done the trojan scan she desribed above.

I am pretty sure Mike will have the necessary protection on his server too so it may be that the attack was just an attack as you downloaded the software from Mike. From my extremely limited knowledge of Trojans isn't it the case that the rogue software tries to enter your PC through certain ports when in use, such as when downloading (or uploading). Indeed it could have happened when I uploaded the files to Mike's server but again I think he would know about it if it happened.

Can anyone else help Dreamsyndicate and/or reassure me that this screen saver software is safe to download?

Unfortunately checking out the http://www.guildsoft.co.uk/ site for a faq there isn't any help section listed.

I assume it's probably a localized problem.

As far as viruses and trojan horses the file was checked before it was uploaded to the server as I do will all files I add to the site.

As I type this I also did another upgrade with Norton viruses as a "just in case I missed something scenario" and scanned the zip file for any malicious code and it was clean.

Requirements are 95/98/NT, so it may not work on windows 2000.

For those using older versions of windows it is important to visit the Windows update site on a regular basic and make sure your software is up to date.

I also did a search of runtime errors and screensavers on Google and the list is endless, from AMD and Celeron processors causing problems to different settings in the registry.

One day in the computer world there will be a day when all software works across all platforms. Until that day....the struggle continues.

I also can confirm that I found no virus using the latest update of Kaspersky. One thing though - it's not compatible with XP and that's why the message pops up saying C++ Run Time error when installing. The uninstall program also doesn't work. I got rid of the installation using an earlier system restore point.

What happened ?

I was installing the screensaver, with my internet connection still open (misses rab aka dreamingwombat got that right ) and got a message from Norton there was a sub-seven trojan horse .(and which it caught)
10 minutes later, Norton told me that a certain ???????.scr file in the temp-directory was infected and if i wanted to delete it , which i did .
I thought it was the fresh installed screensaver .

I've now have ran 2 trojan horse programs, and my freshly updated virus program, and NO VIRUSES OR TROJAN'S ARE FOUND .

Because neither rab or indiamike was on line, i thought i posted (instead of PM) what happened, just to prevent other users to get problems .

Sorry to cause some unrest here, thought i did the right thing .
(which turned out wrong).

So, maybe the name of the thread has to be changed now to :
The (triple checked free of viruses & trojan's ) free Indiamike screensaver .
Again, sorry to cause some unrest here .
And big excuses to the rab's, no worries about names & adresses anymore !

BTW, the 'Great screensaver !' at the end of the post, was not meant (and never was) ironic, it was meant as in 'Great screensaver !'

Now...if you'd just created a Mac version, we'd all be wondering why latex was being discussed in relation to computers....Trojans...what Trojans???

Still not been able to emulate that runtime error here. The screen saver works fine with XP. And sorry again to Mac users.

Incidentally if anyone wants to prepare a screen saver for Mac then I will gladly send the images I used. You can sort through and take them from the gallery but the ones I used I had to amend a little - just small things like trimming off white borders from scanning.

Glad the virus / Trojan false alarm has been sorted - no problem btw Dreamsyndicate - better safe than sorry!

EDIT NOTE - This thread is from 2003, the screensaver is no longer available.

I'm trying to find out what is causing a couple of problems on my PC. (Windows XP HOME)

I've removed loads of programs but can't remove the Indiamike screensaver program, I get the following message....

Does anyone know how to remove this program?

Below is one of the problems I've had for years, though I've no idea if the screensaver program contributed to the problem, part of my desktop just vanished and no matter what I try, I can't get it back.

Another problem I have, is the following message keeps appearing whenever I close 'My Documents'....

Any advice about any of the above would be appreciated.

No Idea either, but a good start would be to explain how you tried to remove it and how do you know it is not removed.

I would also check the autoexec.net file with notepad for contents relating to the screensaver.

As for your wallpaper desktop problem, did you try to put on a wallpaper using the specialised options of programs like ACDsee or the freeware XnView? Does it get the same results?

Did you play with the tile and other wallpaper options to see if it gets things back to normal?

And if the desktop html file is not there (or is it?) why not try making a desktop.html file there and see what happens, or look for such a file on another computer?

(Always backup everything)
