I think it will work for any NEW threads you post in/subscribe to. For your previously subscribed threads you have to go in and unsubscribe to them individually. Go to "Quick Links" then "Subscribed Threads" and uncheck the "Notification" box beside each subscribed thread.

Indeed; moreover at the top right of this menu (Subscribed Threads), in the red title bar there, you can tag the "notification" box to select all of them.* Now in the drop-down menu at bottom right, you can select "no email notification." Hit "go," and you should be rid of those existing notifications.

* It either selects all your subscribed threads, or just those listed on that page you see. Still, this way you could clean up page by page, so still speeding up the process.

(Alternatively, if at any point you want to change your subscription or notification settings for any given thread, you can do so through the "Thread Tools" button on top of individual threads.)

ps To automatically subscribe to threads you reply to is likewise an option in your User Settings/Control Panel, it can be switched on or off as you please. This is in the same menu where you control those notifications from; it can be set to don't subscribe at all.
