Dbase error

well that was interesting! Tried to log on this morning and thought "uh oh"......maybe another ship has pulled up an undersea cable (what is it with master mariners and their propensity for pulling up cables - and eating cheesecake) Then firefox put up a message saying there was a database error and the IM administrator had been notified! So which piece of MS or open source code was responsible this time???

oh well - back up and running again.

Yes, I saw that too. Luckily I was online when this was happening. Kicked the server twice, spun clockwise, and sacrificed a small animal. Seems to be running OK now. Hope it stays that way.... I'm running out of small animals.

don't forget the tried and trusted hoping on one leg while whistling yanky doodle dandy in f sharpe for 10 seconds while hitting the "off switch" (still works for me).

oh...and shhhhhh! Don't give away too many IT secrets or else everyone will be doing it!

Yes - got it also. And there appears to be a problem accessing the site daily at 10:00pm & 11:00pm Eastern time .... and then for about 15 minutes after the top of those hours. Not a big deal and not sure if this is happening to others but it is rather unusal and (from random website accesses) common only to the Indiamike.com website.

Guilty as charged on one count.

The other, err, Egypt says satellite imagery shows no ships were around that area by far.

And, conspiracy theories abound.

Quote:
The notion that something spookier than ships’ anchors was to blame gained ground when Egypt’s transport ministry said it had studied video footage of the sea lanes where the cables had been, and no ships had crossed the line of the breakage for 12 hours before and after the accident (the area is, in fact, off limits to shipping). Suspicion spread when yet another cable—between Qatar and the United Arab Emirates—went down on February 3rd. “Beyond the realm of coincidence!” said a user of ArabianBusiness.com.

I'm not looking up your times, but for a while now an automatic back-up takes place at a fixed time of lowest traffic here. The site is inaccessible during that time; should take about 6 minutes or shorter, but it seems to vary and may be longer.

I suspect this is what you're running into, also because of those clearly defined hourly times. Again, it should normally take just a few minutes. If not, consider it a good time to finish that book of yours

ps None of this refers to the database error above or such stuff, I had it too just now. Stuff happens. With any site.

And pps that piece is hilarious as usual Capt. It's funny how such people can never really make up their minds is it the Americans or the anti-Americans, but, heck, it must be America all the same! Or the others, for that matter! All at once, preferably!

Thanks Mac, that explains the blockage. For others who experience it and depending on the age of their system/software it might be necessary to 'delete files' in your browser memory & reboot your computer to reaccess the site.

It shouldn't be really with the problem as described. Best you can do is wait for ten minutes, then see if it functions again. (Maybe hit +ctrl +reload page, this will give you a "fresh" page, instead of the cached version on your machine.)

If this works, you'll at least know the problem lies at the server's end, not at yours. If it then at some point in the future takes longer, it just means the procedure is stalling. There's little you can do about it at that point, except for to wait. Or contacting the admins, who will likely be aware of it and can't help it either. On other sites, I've learned to give it a day or three before bothering anyone, by which time it will normally have fixed itself.

Mind you: There have been some glitches on the server over the past few months. This just happens, with any site. I'm talking quite specifically about that backup procedure; if it happens at other times, who knows what's wrong, but it will be unrelated to this in any case. I've seen no glitches here that extend past a few hours though. Which is quite good really. Of course if everyone responsible is on holiday... well, you may really have to revert to reading books. Yikes!

I have the server set to backup at 10:00pm EST, which is 7:30am IST. For some reason, the server locks up while it's doing that and I haven't been able to figure out how to get it to NOT do that. I finally gave up and hired a pro shop to fix it. Hopefully, they will magically fix it, and I won't have to keep sacrificing small animals.

Bloody hell. Does that mean you have to stand there each day at that hour with a monkey wrench and a couple of burning goats? Poor you.
