Yup. I was thinking meanwhile some set-ups (especially in e.g. a corporate setting) may be set to regularly clear out your entire cache and temporary files and whatnot. This could also interfere with performance for sites like these, i.e., knock that cookie, as well as your browser history and such.
I don't know that, but it seems possible. I know if I were in charge of a network with a decent handful or more of machines I'd like them clean at least at the start of each day, certainly if relevant web surfing weren't that network's primary goal. btw Quick Reply does sometimes hang, if so, try to hit "Advanced (... Reply or whatever it says)" instead, it will be in the same screen & will normally work, even if the other was already hanging. If all else fails, you can often retrieve something by just using your browser's back button, but this is definitely a hit-and-miss affair.

It is a pain to clear out all cookies; all sorts of stuff (Like IndiaMike's Remember Me) gets forgotten. But it is worth a tidy up sometimes.
Likewise, there's a purpose to the cache; to increase performance by not having to download stuff again that is cached. But to an extensive surfer, there seems to come a point where there is just too much of this stuff, and, rather than improving performance, it degrades it. There's a lot of Go-Faster-Stripes thinking goes on: used to have a guy in the office who swore by de-fraging his hard disk at least once a week --- but all his data was loading from a network server!

Er, yes, to get back on this, what I meant is administrators possibly doing this at a system level though.
Anyway, Nadreg, the daily back-up process just lasted some ten minutes or so. Site was behaving lag'ish in the half hour or so before it. No big deal, just reporting. |

Thanks Mach. I'll check the logs. I'm hoping it's just a blip, as it's been behaving pretty well over the last few weeks...

Yes - it's annoying, I usually go play 9 holes of golf while it's loading/playing on my screen.

Unfortunately, there's very little that I can do about the Google ads as they retain all the control on content, but I'll do some research and see how other sites deal with this.

Not to speak for others, but I think Peak has indicated before he works on dial-up (what is that nowadays, 56K or so?) on some ancient machine. Note that contrary to popular belief, dial-up seems to be still fairly common across the world. It's just cheaper or more accessible in many places, it seems. And for similar reasons, people may work on outdated machines, indeed. There's a limit to how far you want to accommodate them, but I think it's a good principle to try and do so if you can. I.e., if you want flash animations and stuff, it's nice to offer them the choice to skip that. If you offer an audio stream, offer a simple mono one as well, can run at as little as 16-32K I think. And have such stuff loading by choice, not by default. And other such simple measures. (I'm not talking about this site of course, which is really blissfully clean by comparison.)
Broadband in India is rumored to mostly run at 256 Kbps I believe. I work on something like 14-20 Mbps d/l by comparison. My machine is something like a decade old but was well-revised in the bucket shop where I got it for peanuts and I'm not complaining (well, I have a fresher one that really sucks, but it's a different story. I should mostly just format it and start again.) So any lags due to banners loading and stuff will be largely unnoticeable to me, but they very well might be to others. |

Airtel launched the 8MBPS plan as well but given the prices its more for companies rather than individuals...

Yes I have an older system & use dial-up yet which is still very efficient, for the most part, on today's internet. A particular fly-in-the-ointment is the googlesyndication.com third-party server downloads which take longer than the entire photo page to load and have the additional nasty habit of locking your scroll bar keys while the video banner plays on&on&on. Even a thread page of self-hosted photos which IM has removed (because it slowed down access to the site for slower systems/dial-ups I believe?)is/was not as slow as the google third-party download cum kidnappings.
Although I plan to upgrade in the near future - it would be ridiculous to do so just to appease sites & advertising companies who feel the need & get paid more for increasingly larger & longer playing spiels. |

Hi all... you might have noticed a temporary glitch in accessing IndiaMike. It should be all resolved now.
Thanks. |

Yes, I did, and at an irregular time (i.e., just now). Found myself discovering some nice new online games instead.
