Change in thread "read" markings
Hello all,
I'm trying an experiment with how the forum marks threads read. This only applies to logged in users. Previously, the information was stored in browser cookies. With cookie based marking, once a user has been inactive for a certain amount of time (the value of the session timeout option) all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies. I've now switched it to using the database instead of the cookie. This option uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. Forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read. This is just a test, and I might switch it back if it causes problems. Please let me know if you notice any issues related to this change.

My new subscribed threads (when I click on my username at top right) jumped from a usual of 4-10 to about 70. It's going back to January 14th. And from the main page I can go back for screens and screens of older posts and they're all marked unread.
Although I suppose that's just due to a "reset" since my old cookies are no longer being accessed? Update: as I'm reading through threads now, they seem to be working fine. Read threads go to a regular font, unread remain bold. |

'Subscribed threads' works only randomly for me now. It often clears to zero upon my first click of the day thus obscuring subscribed threads with unread posts. Are 'read threads' the same as subscribed threads or does this pertain to the shading tone of the title citation once clicked upon?

As of this moment - my personal new posts to threads are not resulting in any advancement to the top of my personal 'subscribed threads' list. If other's make posts to threads I'm subscribed to - then it advances as normal.

My new posts are showing as advanced according to date and time - this seems to be o.k. But what I did notice were quite a number of already read threads were also highlighted.

Threads are marked "read" once you read the last post in that thread.
Also, if you wish to set all threads to read, click on "Quick Links" and select "Mark Forums Read". |

That is a great step forward thanks nadreg!
Fingers crossed that this works okay, it was annoying to have everything marked "read" just because I'd briefly logged in earlier in the day.

The database IS working for threads I've read so far today, hopefully you're talking about threads that would have been marked as read in your cookies, not the new database. |

Yes, it is confusing. All threads are unread whether you've read them or not. Also, as I posted previously - threads that I personally post in - vanish from my subscribed threads & new posts list. As a result when I click on my user name in the top right hand corner of the page the thread that I just posted in is not at the top of the list nor nowhere to be found in the subcribed threads queue or new posts link. For instance I just posted in Ikurus's word association thread - this thread which was previously accessable has now vanished from said access pages. They threads do all appear as per normal in the today's posts link though. Is this only happening to me or do others have this phenomenon happening too?

Can't reset "Latest discussions" to "read"
I used the "Mark All Forums Read" feature. This reset all of "My Subscribed Threads" and "New Subscribed Threads" to read.
However, if I look at the Main page "Latest discussions" everything is still showing up as unread. The same threads will show up as read if I look at the listing via the Forums section, though. In summary, it looks like the new system is working for me, except I can't reset "Latest discussions" to read by using the "Mark All Forums Read" feature. |

That might be a bug in the homepage forum display module. I will take a look and get back to you.
