same problem - blue screen of death giving the same error message. According to the post looks like something else is trying to use the same resources and it hangs (do you by chance have other devices plugged into the PC via USB)? The solution is to get an updated driver and load it in safe mode.

Also - a couple of other databases have said some malware will disguise itself as usbunci.sys - so might pay to do a scan.

If another program is hogging the bandwidth and/or the CPU, the 'traffic' icon (2 linked computers thingy in the system tray) will still be constantly 'lit up', and the browser will d/l, even if VERY slowly. We are talking of a no-lights situation for the first 1-2 min, connection very much active.
not necessarily. If the CPU is on full load, or processing multiple requests then the connection status icon in the tray can remain blank because the PC simply hasn't gotten round to processing the browser request. This is where the task manager comes in handy by showing either the CPU load, or very rapid changes in memory usage (i.e - if an application keeps grabbing lots of memory then dumping it, then grabbing it again and so on, its a good indication that its not coping well).

I want to hook the PC up to a laptop permanently. I might even let u come over and do the setting up, as a Christmas present . Seriously, I'll pick your brain another time for what wud be better/cheaper/efficienter re router/hub-wise, i.e. want to keep the PC off, instead of acting as a host, when the laptop is on, but want to do this cheaply. If I'm not wrong a D-link 502T or MTNL-supplied one (Utell?) shud do the job).
and I would be honoured to help! Pity you can't come over here as I could spring for the coffee and cheesecake. PM me when you're ready.

I agree - but as I hinted earlier, that's not the case. It happens even if IE is the only application open. And 'Processes' shows 'System Idle' at 95. I'll check it again next time I connect though, and see what's happening in those first few mins.

Coffee and cheesecake, huh? Since come next week I'll be gorging away anyway I shud better stay away - and there's always the chance there'll be none left for you all, heheh!
We'll get around to doing something in '08 though.
