I have recently applied for my Indian Visa. I had an email back last night saying even though i put my Visa start date as 28th November this year they have issued it for 16th August which is no use to me at all! The email just said it was at the high commisions discretion and is quite unusual for this to happen. When i called the visa people they just said I would have to apply for a new one and pay again! This just seems wrong to me and i just wondered if anybody has had the same problem and if there is a way you don't have to pay again?

Does not matter what you want, what matters is that what the mission issues. And Indian Mission issues visa which starts from the day of issue. Sorry, them are their rules. You will have to re apply and reup the fees.

Are you in UK (Calne, Wiltshire, as suggested by google?)? If so, then, as far as I know, they have always dated visas to start on the date of issue and, even before the VFS outsourcing business changed all the procedures, any other date was ignored. Thus, applicants need to apply in good time to get the visa before their flight, but not so much in advance as to render the visa useless by that date. Yes, this is very inconvenient to those on an extended world tour who may not plan to be in India for several months.

On the VFS site:
Quote:
"Please note that the validity of visa starts from the date of issue and not from the date of travel"
Sorry.

What is the point of the "Date of Travel" field on the application? As far as I have ever been able to see ... none whatsoever.

The last time I applied for a visa in UK was over six years ago, so I can't give up-to-date advice. You should see the processing periods section of the VFS website for guidance, noting also the public holidays (both English and Indian) which add to the time required. Then add at least a few days to be on the safe side. You can check out the current thread here where people are posting their experiences, too. Just look over the last few pages.

If it were me, and I still lived there, then, as a British citizen, with a British passport, resident in UK, I'd probably apply two to four weeks ahead. If you hold a non-British (and that includes Irish) passport, then things are much more complex.

You are not the first to make this mistake, and probably not the last. Better this way than applying too late: visas are much cheaper than flights!

About ten days before travel should do it in most cases. All bets are off if one has South Asian ancestry..
