i have already applied for new passport and surrender my old passport..while online inquiry about passport status its showing police verification is not done yet.. my problem is i do not want to change my address if this is the case then is it required to do another police verification?

kavya,
police verification is essentially the verification of place of your residence that you have noted in your passport application form.
is the address you want in your passport - the same address you have written in your form?
if so... there is no problem - even if you have changed your surname.

or

have you written a new place of residence - and you want to revert to your old one ?
if this is so... i dont have any ready answers - hopefully someone else will.

usually takes anything between 7-10 days after applying - that the police verification takes place.

After marrying me, my wife needed to have my name written into her passport, even with marriage certificate, residence proof etc a Police Check was done. Anyway that was no hassle as we had alerted the local LIU and the SP as well - it seems that for any passport work they wish to have one verified by Police??

You have already made the application, you are already going through the process; whatever they determine to happen will happen, it is out of your hands.

In the light of that, it doesn't seem to be very useful to get opinions elsewhere on the police verification. If we say 'no', but the passport office says 'yes' then yes it is!

If you are concerned about the amount of time taken, you could have applied under tatkal scheme and got your passport in a week. In my wife's case, police verification was needed, and they came to the house after the passport had been issued. Her application was more complex though, so the details don't apply to you.

As the song says, Whatever will be, will be!

If you really need to know now, then you can do one of two things: ask the passport office where, after standing in a long queue, they might or might not tell you, or, ask at your local police station if the officer responsible for such things has received your file. I have heard of them waiting for some inducement to bring the file to the top of the pile; even the agent who handled my wife's application told we should do this, but the officer that visited us was not of that way and did not even hint at any payment.
