Hi guys,

Does anyone have any up to date information on whether the authorities are extending the relaxation over restricted area permits for the North Eastern states. Over each of the last couple of years there has been an announcement around this time. With regard to Arunachal Pradesh does anyone have information over the ease of getting a permit issued in london or india if there are only two people entering who would prefer to travel independtly within the state. Any general advice on the North East states would be much appreciated. Fly out to India in a couple of weeks from London and plan to meet up with a travelling buddy in Kolkata in April to head North East.
Many thanks.

Hi JPR,

As far as I am aware, there have not been any recent changes to permit rules. That is to say, for foreigners and Indian nationals alike, a permit is a requirement for Arunachal Pradesh. For foreign nationals there is no longer any need for a permit for Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram (this has been true for the past couple of years only). For Meghalaya and for Assam no permits are needed. Tripura does not need a permit. Sikkim needs a permit but it is easily obtained.

Online sites are not always kept up to date.

There are a couple of people on IndiaMike who have succeeded in travelling independently to Arunachal Pradesh. Please look at the Arunachal Pradesh forum.

As you are in London, I reckon your best idea would be to enquire about the Restricted Area Permit for Arunachal Pradesh when you ask for your Indian visa. Be sure to write down ALL the places you intend visiting, otherwise you will not be allowed to go to them. Even if there are more of them on the list than you actually visit, it is better than leaving some out and remembering later. Good luck.
