Dear All,
I need some information on the validity of the Indian passport. My wife is due to travel back to UK next month. She has noticed today that her passport expires in August.

She tried to call an agent who said one needs 6 months of validity on the passport in order to travel. I've had a look around on the internet. I can see some rules like that on websites but looks like they apply to travel in the US.

BA websites does not mention validity of passport.

Does any one have any experience / knowledge of this situation. Please let me know.

I will be most grateful.

Thank you.

Mil.

You do not mention what kind of passport your wife has. The phrase "travel back" seems to imply that she is normally resident in the UK so has some kind of residence permit (I'm assuming she is travelling on an Indian passport) for the UK. In that case she shouldn't have any problem entering the UK. I would advise her to apply for a new passport at the Indian High Commission immediately on her arrival there.

In case she has a UK passport she could even enter the UK on an expired passport but I doubt if she would be allowed to leave India with such a document.

You definitely need six months validity on your passport to apply for an Indian visa, but once you have that, I know of no reason why you cannot travel to India if you have a valid passport when you travel; if your passport needs renewal before you leave, your Embassy can issue you a new one while you're in India.

Six month validity is mostly seen for visas. However having said that, I know that very recently passport controls/immigration/migracion/ in two countries, and one land border did a low-volume whine-grade remarks on my soon-to-be-expiring passport, but let me in anyways.

Please check the British UK Border Agency web site. It is pretty thorough.

I couldn't see anything about any such restriction, but I just took a quick look.

Whilst any single travel agent may not know what he is talking about, the airline check-in staff consult a database of requirements. If you do not satisfy them, they will not allow you to check in and fly. Member nycank is the expert on this...
