Passport and SSN name doubts

My name is misspelled in the Indian passport, which is about to expire. I also have a SSN in US with the same mispelled name. Now, since I am going to apply for a new passport, I am thinking about using the correct name.

Other than passport and US SSN all other documents have the correct name.

I have two questions with respect to this.

1) What is the procedure to change the name in the new passport?
2) What will happen if I travel with the new passport to US?

As far as I know, US Immigration does not tap into the Social Security database, so it shouldn't be a problem upon entering the US. But if you have an Indian passport and are going to be working in the US (with a permit/visa, of course) then you will want everything to be spelled the same.

You might want to write to Social Security in the US and arrange to get the name corrected, so that all your records agree.
