Hi All,

My Mother is in the US with my brother in Virginia on Visitor's Visa. She went in July 2005. She will be completing 1 year in US by July 2006.

Her Indian Passport is expiring in December 2006. She wants to renew it as soon as possible.

My questions are:
1. Can she apply for a new passport in the US in July (at the Indian Embassies)when she completes one year at one place of residence?

2. If she can do it in US, what is the nearest Indian Embassy in US where she can apply?

3. Is it possible to get a Tatkal service in the US for this purpose?

4. If the process is not possible in US, can she return to India (Hyderabad) and apply from India? I am asking this question because at that time of applying, she would not have one year of residence at my Hyderabad location. This means that she will have 2 residences in 1 year which means police verification at 2 places. I basically want to avoid this.

5. Again, is Tatkal possible in India in this case?

Please reply. I will highly appreciate your answers/suggestions.

Thanks,
Samuel.

One part is easy Virginia is adjacent to Washington, D. C. so the nearest embassy/consulate is there. I think you can use google.com to get the contact info by using the string, India embassy US..

One more point. I don't understand the tatkal reference but guess you are referring to agents that handle this and all you do is but in visa etc. and the agencies pop up under any search engine. Still, its not complicated to do it yourself..

Hey there!

Here's the link for the embassy. I strong suggest you contact them and ask them these question directly...

http://www.indianembassy.org/newsite/default.asp

I had to renew my passport about 4 years ago in NY, and the whole process took about a day.
It's always darkest before it goes completely black.

Thanks to you guys for answering.

Hi Edwardseco,
See this official website (http://passport.nic.in/).

As per the rules , a person can apply for passport on Urgent basis or Non-Urgent basis.

Urgent procedure is called Tatkaal. Typically, Urgent procedure is for people with urgent needs. For instance, for students who need a passport to book a US Consulate slot for F1 Visa or for people who need to go for emergency medical treatment at Onsite. In such cases, the passport is issued in 5 days. The applicant needs to appear in front of the Passport officer who checks/verifies the application and just stamps his approval. So, Tatkaal is an official process and is not related to any agent.

Now, Non-urgent procedure is the normal process - which means there is no emergency. Typically you will apply and wait for 2 to 3 months to get your passport.

So, I was wondering if a Tatkaal process (which is very much available in India) is also available in US.

Please reply if you guys know the answers.

Thanks,
Samuel.

Samuel, MANY years ago when I owned an Indian passport & had to renew it..it was processed within a day..actually half a day.. in D.C. as I'm orig from VA too. i went there very early in the morning before they opened, (first in queue), done by about late lunch time..it's best to contact them directly as Nadreg suggested for further information. I think I may have had to supply extra passport size photos too...i really can't remember?! too long ago!

good luck!
Om Shanti

I think that is the answer, go early with all documents downloaded & completed plus pictures and skate through. Wish it was that easy for someone who doen't have the old passport or much other documentation (something I am handling)..
