Raahgiri Day is India’s first sustained car-free citizen initiative that began in Gurgaon on Nov 17, 2013. The movement was conceived and is trademarked with the Raahgiri Foundation, consisting of local inhabitants from five organizations – EMBARQ India, I Am Gurgaon, Pedalyatri, Heritage School Gurgaon, Duplays Gurgaon.

Navi Mumbai also has it's own Raahgiri day in association with Times of India on specific Sundays from 6:00 am to 9:00 am. A stretch of Palm Beach Road adjacent to Seawoods holding pond (from Vazirani Sports Club to TS Chanakya signal) is closed for vehicles during those timings. Traffic going towards CBD Belapur is diverted to the other half.

Events organized are Zumba, Karate, Fitness, Yoga, Meditation, Dance, Badminton, Football, Volleyball, Cycling, Skating, Hoola Hoops etc.

This event also gives some good opportunity for some candid photography.

Good oppurtunity for sunrise, reflections and silhouettes.

Now this event has been renamed in Navi Mumbai as Happy Street. I understand a similar event happens in Bandra as well as Ghatkopar.

I also believe that this event takes place in other cities of India as well. Any report from other cities?

Seems Raahgiri Day is held in Hyderabad, Delhi, Chandigarh, Bandra, Gurgaon (who started it), Coimbatore etc.

Would love to see reports from cities where it is being held.

Rahagiri from where it started !

The first R-D was a small affair, then in '14 the got a band-baja guy - It's seems he's quite famous !

Holding it one weekend in Feb every year !

The location should be away from the Mall-mile or Call-center-ghettos.

How successful it is, is yet to be seen.

It has been started at Indore also since last Sunday, 13th December. Last year also it was held during winter season.

Didn't attend and there is no plan to attend... as a lot of hoo-haa and mismanagement take place there.

Don't want to disturb morning walk and Sunday activities... going to sabzi mandi and bringing vegetables for the week...

It is a vehicle free road/zone. If you look at the 2nd last image you will see the vehicle free zone on the right side.

The authorities in Indore wish to outsource the event in Indore, but not yet successful in engaging any agency, hence, delay...
