I hope to attend. This one is in Nasik (Nashik?) and is NOT the big one- the maha kumbha mela. Am I right?

There are four cities (Haridwar, Allahabad, Ujjain & Nasik) where these Maha Kumbh are held. Each one gets its Mahakumbh after a gap of 12 years. Nasik held Maha Kumbh in year 2003 last time. This would be BIG one again at Nasik attracting several million people. Below text is from wiki....

The next Kumbha Mela will be held at Nashik (Maharashtra) from 14 July to 25 September.[54] The details of most auspicious days (bathing dates) in year 2015 during Nashik Kumbh Mela are[55]

26 August 2015 (Wednesday): Shravan Shudha- First Snan
29 August 2015 (Saturday): Shravan Purnima - First Shahi Snan at Ram Kunda
13 September 2015 (Sunday): Bhadrapad Amavasya - Second Shahi Snan/ Main bathing day
18 September 2015 (Friday): Bhadrapad Shukla Panchmi (Rushipanchami) - Third Shahi Snan
25 September 2015 (Friday): Bhadrapad Shukla Dwadashi - Vaman Dwadashi Snan

Thanks.
I see the major dates are spread over 4 weeks. If I wanted a "snapshot" visit of 3-5 days, what period/ dates would you advise?

26-29 August (3 days), or 13-18 September (5 days)

You do realise it is in 2015 (aka, next year)?

Absolutely, yes
I tend to plan a long time ahead; the joy is in the planning as much as the traveling

August may be rainy so bear that in mind. Agree that anticipation is manna for the soul.

BholeBaba, would you mind sharing how you planned your visit, did you work with a tour organizer, any tips. I plan to visit by myself. Not averse to roughing it a little, but I do love some comforts at the end of the day.
Great photos!

Ah I won't be of much use to you I am afraid. I decided to go like a day before I actually went, mainly because my excessively religious mother said she was going and I felt I should accompany her given the crowds et al. (Not that I really helped, she awoke at 4 am to bathe in the river while I was fast asleep). I was meant to stay at an Ashram but luckily a local Allahabadi friend intervened and I ended up staying at his house in the posh part of town. I would think that the 2015 mela at Nasik will be a much smaller affair than the 2013 Mahakumbh Mela which happens once in I don't know how many years. I might see you there.
