Hi All

Myself and girlfriend are off to India in March 2015 and are starting our trip with the Holi celebrations around Mathura and Vrindavan .

I was just wondering, where would be a better place to stay, we will in Mathura/ Vrindavan from March 2nd until the festivities die down so 4 or 5 days or so.

I know the towns aren't far from each other, but where would be better to base ourselves for all the action, and ceremonies?

Thanks guys!!

Hi
Vrindavan is the better place to stay, simply based on the fact that Mathura is not a good place to stay in general. But Vrindavan is extremely congested at such times. It is best for you if you arrive well ahead of the beginning of the festivities.

There are many threads here on Holi in the Vrindavan area; for a start look at the threads at the bottom of this page.

The best thing to do is you choose a temple in whose compound you stay on the main day of Holi from morning till after noon. The main ceremony starts some time before noon, maybe around 10 a.m. (if it is the same from where I know it), and ends early after noon.

First the colour is offered to the images/deities worshipped there, then one by one the devotees sprinkle colour on each others' heads, and this sprinkling then becomes more excited and exstatic. In the temple compounds it is a devotional fun that happens within the boundaries of friendliness, whereas outside in the streets it can often be with drunken madness and aggressiveness.

Be especially aware of people with water-pistols; they often use colour which stains for good. Best buy a set of clothes in India which you then can throw away later.

Bring plastic bags for your camera. Best bring only a small camera which you can hide and protect fast when colour dust is thrown at you.

Even if you stay in a Mathura hotel, you can choose a temple in Vrindavan for the main day of Holi to stay.

Hi Everyone,

I came up with the below itinerary. Can you suggest any tweaks to get a better time utilization.

24th Kolkata to NDLS.
25th travel to Mathura.
25th travel to Barsana
26th shoot Barsana. Travel to Nandgaon.
27th shoot at Nandgaon. Travel to Mathura. Travel to NDLS.
28th Travel to Agra.
29th NDLS to Kolkata.

Also, who all would be there in Barsana & Nandgaon on 26th & 27th?

24th Kolkata to NDLS.
Get down at Tundla, and get a car via Agra to Mathura.

Why twice to New Delhi?

Btw, Nandgaon is close to the highway back to Delhi. Pretty far away from Mathura.
On your return you would also be best served by getting on the train in Tundla again, if times permit and you chose a train which stops there.

Is it impractical to plan to cover Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon on consecutive days?

No @atala, my train won't stop at Tundla. Rethinking my route, do you think I should travel from Barsana to Vrindavan on the 26th evening, and then set off for Nandgaon the next morning?

I don't know what you want to do at Barsana and/or Nandgaon, that would be worth spending a whole day at each place. If you are interested to visit Radha's place, it is just one temple on a hill. It would not take you more than an hour there. You say "shoot", so you want to take pics of the local affairs there?

Nandgaon is close to Barsana; so you would be better off getting there after Barsana, not return to Vrindavan, and again go there on difficult roads. In fact, distance-wise it would be best you go there right away when you come from Delhi, but for that you would need to go by car. Because Nandgaon is close to the highway between Delhi-Mathura.

Have you been to Vrindavan before? There is much more picturesque going on in Vrindavan than at any of the other places.

And why go twice to Delhi? Does not make sense, except if you have an appointment there at that time.

The purpose of my trip is to cover the Lathmar Holi. I will be there at the Radha Rani Temple in Barsana on 27th for this event. I went through an old thread Barsana Village , and your posts were very helpful. After my research, the best place for me to halt would be in Vrindavan. I'm trying to find a place on Raman Reti road near to the Bankey Bihari Temple. I will then travel to Nandgaon on the 28th to caption Lathmar again. Then on 1st March I will shoot Holi at Bankey Bihari. Then head back to Delhi finally.
