Hi! I'll be in India for Holi and am so excited! I know it wil be on March 6th, but I've read that there are a bunch of different celebrations leading up to that day. I've decided to spend the 5th & 6th in Vrindavan and 2-3 days before that in Varanassi. What are some festivals and happenings leading up to the 6th that shouldn't be missed? And, just to
make sure I don't miss something.. the big day to actually play Holi is the 6th, right? I read some things that made it seem like it might actually be on the 5th (in Vrindavan)?

The 6th is The Day . . . to not miss anything just be out on the streets . . . festivals in India are seldom kept secret Vrindavan should be a good place for it, or take a little ride over to Mathura too . . . the only way to miss anything is to stay in your room with earplugs on and your eyes shut

ok thanks for clearing that up Would you recommend Mathura over Vrindavan? Or are both equally as good? Is one safer than the other? I've read through the horror stories and it's making me worry a bit but I don't want to be there for Holi and lick myself in a hotel room. My boyfriend will be with me and i'm hoping to maybe find a group over others to hang with(strength in numbers) .. but still.. I want to be able to have fun, take awesome photos and feel safe-ish

"Safety" is not as location-dependant (though smaller places would/might be "safer" simply due to numbers) as it is "luck and doing your homework" dependant (Oh, and then there's karma ) Listen to locals. Talk to the owner of the place you stay. Get a group together. Take care of your camera. That's about all you can do. And I don't think I'd worry too much about which place is 'best.' Anywhere in the Vrindavan/Mathura area would be great . . . anywhere in India would be great

May be you could opt for Lath Maar holi at Barsana which happens a few days before the actual holi. You could also be at Jaipur for the elephant festival a day before at actual holi.

Kristin

The 'action' will move around different cities on different days. Here's the schedule for 2015.

26 Feb 2015, Thursday: Barsana Holi

27 Feb 2015, Friday: Holi in Nandgaon

1 March 2015, Sunday: Lathmar Holi in Krishna Janmabhoomi, Mathura

5 March 2015, Thursday: Holika Dahan ( Holi Fire)

6 March 2015, Friday: Colorful Water Holi in Brij

Source : http://www.radhekrishn.com/mathura-holi.php. Did you go through Khagta's photo link I shared on another thread? If you correlate that with this, there's significant action on 1st, 5th and 6th. Lathmar is when the women beat the men with sticks.

The colourful Holi on the 6th of March is my main priority, but I would really like to see the festival where the women and men have a mock battle and the women have sticks, but I'm getting confused with the contradictory information.
The first website says that us Barsana Holi is on the 26th of Feb in Barsana (What's that?) and Lathmaar Holi is on the 1st of March in Mathura. http://mathuravisit.com/mathura-fest...2014-2015.html
The second website says that Lathmaar Holi is is Barsana on the 28th of Feb and the 1st of March. http://www.hindu-blog.com/2011/02/la...stival-in.html
I'm inclined to beleive the second as lots of other places seem to talk about the famous Lathmaar Holi in Barsana, but this isn't something I want to mess the date up on.
Does anyone know which is right? Are they both right?
Thanks

Hi Globaltrailblaz,

The dates on the internet are not yet confirmed. I am also going to the event and ideally the dates should be as below.

26 Feb 2015, Thursday: Barsana Holi
27 Feb 2015, Friday: Holi in Nandgaon
1 March 2015, Sunday: Lathmar Holi in Krishna Janmabhoomi, Mathura
5 March 2015, Thursday: Holika Dahan ( Holi Fire)
6 March 2015, Friday: Colorful Water Holi in Brij

For stay you have to take hotel in Vrindavan (near Banke Bihari temple) and travel to Barsana and Nandgaon as there are not much hotels available in Barsana.

I will be travelling to the event let me know if you are interested to go around in a group.

Thanks,
Regards,
-Pinaki

Thanks for the info. What is in Barsana Holi then? Is that the one where women have sticks and men throw colour?
And if Barsana Holi is that, then what is included in the Lathmar Holi in Krishna Janmabhoomi.
I would be interested in joining together with a group of other travelers.
