From a little research I have found out that Dussehra is held on/starting on October 14th this year. Is this correct?

I was hoping to visit the Taj Mahal on that date - would the festival cause any problems with closure?

If the Taj is shut, I will have to change my schedule and be in Jaipur on the 14th - what can I expect in Jaipur during Dussehra?

Thanks!

It's a Monday, Taj wont be shut.

On the other hand, if you're in Jaipur, the Adarsh Nagar Dussehra maidan has the tallest Ravan, kumbhakaran and Meghnad effigies in the region - around 100 feet tall. Worth a visit if you can brave the crowds and noise (of people and fireworks)

Here's a youtube:
. It mislabels Adarsh Nagar Dussehra Maidan as Ramlila maidan. Ramlila maidan is several kilometers away and its not the venue for the said effigy burning. Also, since the last few years, we've kinda done away with kumbkaran effigy (and no one seems to mind).

Thank you for the info! It seems that I should do my best to be in Jaipur on this date because it sounds like quite a spectacle - thanks again!

Correct decision, but you should also check on which date Dussehra would be celebrated (effigies would be burnt) this year in Jaipur - 13th or 14th!

Could you point me in the direction of someone/a website that would know? I have seen one website claiming that it's the 13th and another claiming that it's the 14th!

Dussehra is being celebrated on both the days based upon Hindu Calendar. Effigies would be burnt on 13th in some part and on 14th in few parts.

You will have to wait for some locals (like Vaibhav) to inform you the exact date.

Otherwise also, Jaipur is around four hours from Delhi (which will be most probably your base).

It will be in the papers a few days before. The papers are mostly in hindi but I can post here when that happens. Perhaps write in a note here closer to the date? Do you plan on arriving by bus / train?

As per the local paper today, the astrologers have determined the date for effigy burning and Vijayadashmi celebration to be October 13th. Since the time for dahan (burning) is sunset so expect the same to be between 6-8 pm.

What a rare coincidence that Dashmi (tenth day) is the same day as Navmi (ninth day). Details here: http://epaper.bhaskar.com/detail/?id...o=2&view=image. 'Mata ki Chowki' on the 9th is the same western calendar day as Ravana burning on the tenth! (I trust prakaant / others would be able to help add the necessary cultural translation). Expect bumper traffic jams, celebrations and what not.

That gives you time to leave for Agra the next morning and visit the fort and other attractions.

mod note: I'm changing the title of this thread as others can pool in the information of exact celebration dates from other parts of the country.

You are correct, Vaibhav.

Mahanavmi and Mahadashmi are on the same day, i.e., 13th October in almost every part of India. And Ravan Dahan would be done on 13th October..

Thanks again for your help.

It seems as if I should try to be in Jaipur on the 13th then?

The only issue is that I have already booked train tickets to arrive in Agra on 13th then on to Jaipur on the 14th. Will anything be happening in Jaipur on the 14th?

I couldn't really go from Jaipur back to Agra to see the Taj as I have tickets booked onwards from Jaipur to Jodhpur.

You need not change your bookings for this as you will find Dussehra being celebrated at Agra also with the same fanfare. The local Hotel guy will tell you where you should go to view it.

The problem is that my train is booked at 20:05 from Agra to Jaipur, arriving in Jaipur at 00.35, which means I'd miss the celebrations in both cities! How easy would it be to get a driver from Agra to Jaipur after the celebrations in Agra? Is that a possible option?

You may consider 12403 Allahabad Jaipur Express for 14-October-2013 morning (Agra Cantt Departure at 07:25 Hrs and Jaipur Arrival at 12:50 Hrs). Currently, there are 12 berths available in 3 AC and 154 berths in Sleeper Class.

Else, you will find plenty of cabs during night hours. There should be buses also.

I have read elsewhere that driving from Agra to Jaipur is dangerous, especially at night. Do any of you have opinions on this? This is my first time in India so I'm unaware of any issues with using the roads!
